This is I think a good quality puerh tea. It had a moderate amount of fermentation flavor. That flavor was neither unpleasant or fishy. I wasn’t really paying attention to the specifics but would say that this was sweet from the start with little to no bitterness. The fermentation taste was present for the first four or five steeps and then no more. This was a good tea. I think the brand Long Run puerh is a quality brand. It is available here from Spring Tea Group. They also sell through Amazon which is where I got this.

I steeped this ten times in a 160ml Solid Silver Teapot with 14.6g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec,and 1 minute. The leaves were not done but ten steeps from a 160ml teapot is a lot of tea. I am sure I could have gotten another four or five steeps out of it.

Lucky us that there is a seller of LongRun teas in the west as it is usually available only in China. I believe even their Hong Kong shop has closed down. I wish it was more widely available.

This tea was strong, punchy and bitter. The bitterness lasted until around the eighth steep. After that it became sweeter. It became quite tasty just took a long while to get there.

I steeped this tea twelve times in a 150ml gaiwan with 8.2g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 minutes. This one might age well. Will put it away for a year and see what it tastes like.

This cake arrived in the mail dry as a bone and hard as rock. I wanted to do some experimenting with storage and aging without ruining a good/expensive cake. This cake was a cheap buy off of Amazon (don’t judge me!) so I went for it. Plus, you know, two day shipping. Anyway, I did have some the very first day it arrived, and it was just “ok.” I put it in a crock inside my makeshift pumidor, and waited a few weeks. Came back to it tonight. The cake is more fragrant, more pliable, and has definitely improved a bit. I know I should have waited longer, but I was in the mood to try it again so I did. 6g, boiling, gongfu, short steeps. 3 rinses. Earth, peat, wood, mushrooms. Not much sweetness. It’s slightly sour (probably fermentation) in early steeps, but mellows out later. I do know that I will continue to re-visit this tea over the course of several months, and it should be interesting.

Mine definitely kept getting better over the months after I purchased it. I probably sipped on it for about 6 months and just finished it off recently. About middle-end it turned into one of my favorite shou puerhs. In addition to the flavors you described I got vanilla and cinnamon, and some sweetness. Never completely lost that fermentation flavor but it definitely subsided quite a bit.

Good to know, thanks Brian!

I scored this pu’er at the World Tea Expo, but it looks like LongRun sells their teas on Amazon.

This raw pu’er starts off with an unripe sour fruit flavor and smoke with a moderate dryness. With each infusion the pu’er gets more peachy sweet with wisps of smoke. Lots of tea drunk in this one as I had constant thoughts of Bigfoots.

I steeped this with boiling water, though I think I need to try it with cooler water for less dryness.

I’m considering purchasing one of their fermented cakes from Amazon. 357 grams is a lot of tea to have if it isn’t good though.

I tasted one of their ripe cakes at WTE, I don’t which one it was but it was so so. Too bad they don’t do samples of the cakes. I got a whole bunch of instant pu’er and pu’er tea bag samples though (I question how those will taste!)

curlygc

Oh dear, instant pu’er sounds…. nope, lol! I went ahead and ordered the 2011 Chun Hui ripe cake. Will post a review here once I get it. If it’s a halfway decent morning drinker, I’ll be happy.

I just finished off a 2011 Chun Hui ripe cake. It was great. Very rich, creamy and delicious. If you don’t like it I’ll glady buy it from you @curlygc :)

Oolong Owl

Oooh that sounds good @Brian! Now I’m tempted too

I will let you both know if it doesn’t work out, I’m always up for a tea trade. It just got delivered today and I’m still at work (not working, clearly), so I’ve not had a chance to try it. Ah, new tea… makes every day like Christmas!
