I’m not normally a huge fan of Adagio’s flavored stuff. I used to be. But I suppose places like Kusmi, Lupicia and Mariage Freres have raised my expectations for flavored teas and Adagio no longer matches up. That being said, the husband loves having his tea with lots of sugar and milk and I refuse to sacrifice some of my super tasty (and sometimes expensive) teas (both flavored and un-) to him because of that. He gets Stash and Adagio and the like.
This is the tea I made for him this morning and the leaves smelled so good, I had to make myself some. The smell made me think of icing on an Earl Grey cupcake (if one were to make and ice an Earl Grey cupcake). Sadly, post-steeping the smell calms down from that super-sweetness a bit. But happily it still smells like an Earl Grey cupcake, just now the baked cake part (I think that’s the vanilla note making me think of cupcake cake).
The taste isn’t as cupcake-y as the smell(s). In fact, I get no cupcake. (Sadness.) But it is still nice. Oh, it’s not the smoothest tea – it’s got a little prickly texture that isn’t astringency but probably would turn into that if steeped longer – but the flavor is nice. There’s a bit of a perfume/fake flavor note on the front end, especially when slurped but the vanilla/cream-ish note to it smooths things out a bit.
Honestly, it’s not the best tea ever or anything, but it is totally drinkable without additives and that counts for something in my book.

Earl Grey cupcake… Hmmm… I approve! I think I have to try to make them now… I recently had Earl Grey macaroons and they were amazing!
Ninavampi, that sounds delicious! Did you adapt the macaroon recipe or find an EG one? How’d you do it?
I totally agree with withholding the better stuff from him. There are limits after all and if I were to see someone murdering the Tan Yang with milk and sugar I think I would have to find a private place a cry for a while.
I actually bought the macaroons… (blushing embarrassed… ) I haven´t gotten around to actually making them myself, but I will let you know (if they turn out right of course) how I tweak the recipe!
Also, have set y mind to also making earl grey cupcakes! yummmm…. : )
Hah! You cheater! :) I will have to keep an eye out for Earl Grey cupcakes, though because I’d love to see how you tweak them and how it turns out. I have a recipe for a coffee cheesecake that I keep planning to switch to a lapsang cheesecake, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Ah, tea desserts!
It was cheating that I couldn’t resist! : ) Really, how could you resist buying sparkling Earl Grey macaroons?
Hopefully I will get around to making the cupcakes this weekend! : ) and hopefully the macaroons soonish as well! The cheesecake idea sounds great!
Ah, tea desserts indeed! : )
You are right – it’s cheating I probably couldn’t have resisted either! Can’t wait to hear about cupcakes! :)
Cupcakes done! They were pretty good, but I feel that there is still some perfecting to be done… If you want the recipe I can PM it to you. : ) I boiled Earl Grey in the milk for the recipe as well as added a few leaves to the dough, also some white chocolate chips (not to happy about the way that the white chocolate worked out… Probably going for dark chocolate chips next time). For icing I made cream cheese icing, also using Earl Grey milk. : )
I shared them with my boyfriend and his family. They all liked them a bunch!
Yes, I’d love the recipe! I love the idea of steeping the EG in the milk – I wouldn’t have thought of that. Last night I picked up the ingredients to make a cheesecake – this year my coffee cheesecake will be lapsang cheesecake! (EG was a close second for flavoring but I thought the smokey flavor might be more interesting & noticeable.)

Gasp Just that thought alone is enough to make angels weep. (Or, you know, me.)
