From Yunnan Sourcing

Huang Shan area in Anhui Province of China is known for it’s incredibly picturesque mountains, and also for it’s chrysanthemum cultivation.

Our “Emperor’s Yellow Chrysanthemum” (黄山贡菊花) is a rare chrysanthemum type that was originally cultivated exclusively for the Emperor of China during the Ming Dynasty. Both the color yellow and enjoyment of this particular chrysanthemum was the sole domain of the emperor and those who lived in the Royal Palace.

In modern times, this Emperor’s Yellow has become available to anyone willing to pay it’s price. It’s a low yield flower and only picked in the spring from certain villages in Huang Shan at an altitude of 700-900 meters.

Despite all the fuss and historical prestige this varietal is simply the best in terms of taste, aroma and medicinal value. We recommend making this tea in a bowl or gaiwan with 85-90 celsius water… and letting cool just a bit before drinking it. The taste is so smooth, and soothing. There is a minty cooling effect as well. You can also mix with (and brew together) other teas, like ripe pu-erh, raw pu-erh, black tea or even white tea!

TTB tea! I’ve ended up trying a bunch of pure chrysanthemum through various TTBs, and I enjoy them every time. This one isn’t quite as juicy and fruity as some, but it was quite refreshing cold. The cold resteep was tasty too!

#SVTTB Round Two – Tea 1/???

Gongfu!

I just received the ‘Strange Variety Travelling Tea Box’ from VariaTea yesterday, so I had fun this morning digging into all of the new teas that have been added to it since it last went out for round one. I was also pleased to see that many of the teas I had initially added had since been removed; so hopefully that means that they made their way to
be enjoyed by many others!

I’m about to go on a week and a half long vacation in a few days, so I won’t have time to sip through everything that interests me or to ship out the box before then – but that’s okay because we actually haven’t done the full coordination for who will be getting the box (and in what order) yet…

Anyway, for my first romp I went with this beautiful tisane from YS! This cheerful yellow tisane is so beautiful to look at as it steeps, with a soft and mellow taste of buttery florals with a very peppery undertone; like freshly ground white peppercorns. I’ve also paired it with an equally cute and whimsical looking crab-shaped lotus cake with a salted egg yolk center; it’s a great mid-afternoon nibble with a complimentary buttery quality and a lightly sweet nuttiness before hitting then unctuous yolk in the center of the cake!!
