From Yunnan Sourcing

“Huang Shan Gu Shu” (lit. Yellow Mountain Old Tree) is a mountain in Jinggu County of Simao where 100-300 year old tea trees are growing. Huang Shan tea trees are Assamica varietal growing wild without intervention. Tea is harvested only twice a year, not 4 times a year like in many places. This gives the tea more strength, body, aroma and cha qi!

The brewed tea is pungent, full-bodied and with layered bitterness and sweetness mingling together. It can be steeped many time without losing steam. This tea is certainly good for aging and will be noticeably more delicious and textured as times passes.

April 2015 harvest

My second ever Pu-erh, and first to brew at home. I found it bitter, but not unpleasantly so. Had a bit of an earthy buttery flavor. The first steep after a rinse was light in flavor, and then got stronger as the ball unfurled. By the 8th steep, it was back to the light flavor of the first steep. I enjoyed the lighter flavor more than the deep bitterness & astringency of the middle steepings.

Got this as a free sample with my last YS order

A pretty strongly bitter young sheng. Not unpleasant, but pretty burly. Light fruityness, green grape maybe. I don’t get a lot a flavor complexity off of it, but it has a very nice lingering quality in the mouth. Fairly heady cha qi.

Nice note. I agree with it completely, it isn’t complex at all, but it is pleasant. If you end up getting some I’d recommend storing it in a jar that breathes, it won’t get any more complex but I swear it seems to get a bit richer/honey like. A great everyday or work Puer for sure.

A middle-of-the-road raw pu-erh ball. Pleasantly bitter. A mixture of fruit and floral, with more of the fruit notes on the nose and more of the floral notes on the tongue. Mildly dry, but with a good mouth feel. Mild aftertaste.

This ball is fairly easy to open up. I would place it between Crimson Lotus Planet Jingmai (harder to open) and White2tea Smooch (easier to open).

1st steep – wash for 30 seconds, poking the ball lightly with the gaiwan lid. Discarded. Left gaiwan covered for 5 minutes.

2nd steep – another 30 seconds, more poking. Ball mostly opened up. I drank this one.

3rd steep – fell back to 20 seconds, more poking, and ball finished opening up.

Added +10 seconds from there on in.
