Khongea
One of the highest yielding estates in Assam today, Khongea is located in the upper Assam region, on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river. The Chairman of the company that oversees production at the estate is famously known to have said “if Darjeeling tea is referred to as the ‘Champagne of tea’, a good quality Assam tea garden such as Khongea produces the best ‘single malt whiskies’ of tea.”
Conventionally, the highest quality Assam tea is produced between June and July, during the Second Flush harvest. Few estates have the ability to produce a quality tea post Second Flush. Khongea happens to be one such estate, its Orthodox Assam leaf retaining a deep amber liquor and rich flavor.
