We called our friends in Fujian in early spring and reserved pine wood for tea smoking, anxiously awaiting our space in line. Our Puer all blended and ready in Yunnan, we shipped the blends to Fujian in summer. A veteran Lapsang smoker spent 3 days smoking our tea, smoking at temperatures from 100C to 120C in an old style Lapsang smokehouse in Tongmuguan village.
The unity of old school Fujian tea processing techniques with high quality base materials yields a totally unique smoke experience that pushes the tradition of smoked Puer tea in Yunnan (both the recent intentional and haphazard unintentional versions).
The pine smoke character is laced through the blend with an intense nose that will settle into the base of the tea with aging, eventually transforming into a rare combination of flavors and aromas that few Puer teas can mimic.
As for the tea blend, you can imagine that we wouldn’t phone-in a blend that requires so much planning and legwork to process, suffice it to say it’s fantastic. Burly, full bodied, deep returning sweetness, layered nuance and heavy feel.
Obviously this tea is a natural fit for cigar lovers and Scotch whisky fanatics who want tea in the morning, but this tea is a surprise that will likely garner even fans who are wary of smoke as well.
This is the mini version and each mini is ~7g.
FOR AGING, WE RECOMMEND THAT SMOKED TEAS BE SEALED AND SEPARATED FROM OTHER TEAS, AS THE FRESH SMOKE WILL PASS ALONG TO THE TEAS NEXT TO IT. OR YOU CAN KEEP THEM WITH YOUR CIGARS.

I wish I loved this tea as much as it deserved to be loved. I’m less a fan of smoke than I thought I was. For someone who does love smoke, this is the flavor. It tasted like a campfire and I am certain it wouldn’t stop giving those notes.

I had no idea how much I needed smoked sheng in my life until W2T decided to carry one and now, having steeped it, I am fully obsessed. Compared to 2021 Smokeshou, the shou pu’erh counterpart released at the same time, this probably isn’t something I would reach for as frequently for a daily tea session but the flavour is incredible. I would actually say that the smoke notes in this tea come off as a bit more strong and intense, just without the same earthy body and deepness. Instead, I found early infusions of this sheng much sweeter underneath the top note smoke blanket; sort of like a jammy red fruit and citrus note coupled with the greener nature of the young sheng. It’s gonna be wild seeing how this tea ages!!

I usually don’t like smoked teas, but am a huge White2Tea fan and wanted to see what they could do with it. I am enjoying this tea very much. Even without age, the smoke is blended fairly well with the body of the actual tea which, as advertised, is clearly high-quality – the leaves are uniform and intact, and discoloration is minimal. One of the more interesting things about this tea is that the smoke flavor develops and changes with each steep, as a separate but related process to the tea’s flavor development that I am more used to. At first, the smoke-flavor is very burly, thick, and almost carcinogenic, but by the third and fourth refills the smoke gives way to a much more young woodsy, very piney flavor. Of course, the tea develops in a very reliable raw manner: very astringent at first, which gives way to much subtler notes as the session develops. Huigan is above average with this one, which serves as a great benefit to the experience of drinking a smoked tea.
At the price point, sadly, I do want something a bit more interesting and craveable – right now, I just feel like I am drinking this because I bought it, and not that I bought it because I want to drink it. I am sure that will change with age and this tea becomes a more interesting experience. Overall, glad to enjoy this as a once-in-a-long-while different tea to luxuriate in.

I like pine smoke, and during the infusions I got different shades of it, but I just kept wondering what’s beneath.
The liquor was thick and chalky, with a good astringency and low bitterness. Heavy but somehow smooth. Felt like drinking a thick-vegetal-fruity-smoky juice. Huigan was good, and the Qi made me feel dizzy and stoned for a while, and a bit jittery afterwards.
I’ll try to push it with some more steepings and I’ll update if I find something new.
