From TheTea

Harvest: Spring 2020

Tea cultivar Qing Xin oolong

Roasting: charcoal roasting – 3×8h and 1×4h – total 28 hours of longan charcoal roast.

This unique Dong Ding oolong was made by mr Cheng Po Chung – renowned and rewarded (he won several Lugu Tea competitions) tea master.

The garden that produced this tea is located at the top of the tea growing area of Fenghuang Mountain, Lugu Township. In fact, sitting at an average altitude of 850m, this is one of the highest gardens in Dong Ding. On a very clear day, you can almost see the ocean from this garden. Mr. Chen is one of the last farmers producing traditional style Dong Ding oolong.

Charcoal roasting was made by our friend from Nantou – he is rewarded specialist in charcoal (tanbei) and electric (hongbei) roasting. He is also focused on developing sustainable and organic tea farming in Nantou area.

Absolutely charming tea made in master grade level. Long and heavy roasting was processed very precise way. You can look at the leaves and any of them is burnt or overroasted. Every step of each 4 rounds of roasting was made under constant supervision.

Tea is intensive – both taste and aroma are overwhelming. The profile of this Dong Ding is dominated by wood, frankincense, fireplace, nuts and well bake bread. Sweetness of magnolia flowers and honey is here too.

Complex, fullbodied and intriguing traditional Dong Ding.

For me personally it’s like a tribute to old style Dong Ding produced many years ago.

Excellent tea for long term storage.

Very elegant and comfortable tea with no rough edges to it. However, it is also lacking a bit of “spacial sauce” to be truly spectacular imo.

Leaves have a floral aroma mixed with notes of cookies and caramel, which transforms into a more herbaceous, earthy and fruity one during the session. It reminds me of root vegetables such as celery and of pear.

The taste is woody and mineral with a significant floral sweetness. There are notes of wet rocks, slightly unripe pears, bread, as we as a fenugreek-like bitterness. The mouthfeel is cooling and numbing, while the aftertaste mostly floral and also a little drying.
