From The Essence of Tea

This year we selected a different village from previous years and arranged the processing of the fresh leaves ourselves. These leaves come from 4-500 year old trees, growing naturally near Douyizhai, the highest village on Nannuo mountain. The trees were left for 5 years unpicked and were picked last year for the first time. We supervised (and helped with) the picking of the leaves and brought the fresh leaves off the mountain to process by hand.

The flavour is thick and pure. Upon drinking the hint of kuwei (pleasant bitterness) transforms quickly in the mouth to leave a long lasting huigan (sweet aftertaste) that coats the mouth and throat. This tea is very elegant, cooling and active in the mouth, with enough strength to age well.

This was my first real experiment with pu erh where I know what it is (young sheng). I admit I am pu erh ignorant and have been hit or miss about them, so the odyssey continues. I don’t tend to find them offensive I just tend to find them lacking in flavor or having cardboard elements.
This tea came in nuggets, but they were excellent looking – whole long leaves pressed together rather than the little broken pieces I have seen before. It came apart fairly easily and smelled great. Almost musty in a way, but musty like a garden shed in mottled shade – something fresh and deep, yet green.

This is like nothing I have ever tasted before.

It is almost floral, as though I am mouthing a damp garden in the rain with earthy notes taking over. These dry and come to the front as leaves of an old book. This one is a really synesthetic experience for me.
Mmm. And it fades into a sweetness at the end… perhaps from some kind of bourbon candy or … no, it is like an amaretto, a deep smoky amaretto, mixed with a harder liquor. Don’t misunderstand, there is no bite, just a smokey sweet aftertaste.

I think I’m in love. A tea that is damp gardens and old books on a rainy day with a dash of an amber sweetness? I couldn’t ask for anything else.
Thank you, Amanda for including this in the box you sent!!

Upon opening this bag of pu-erh it smelled gently sweet AND sour. As for the 1st infusion I found it to be mellower that I anticipated which was a nice surprise. The post-infused color was that of a white tea, almost. The texture was slightly buttery on the tongue and was a sweet-wood type taste. The after taste was also pleasant. I did notice the cooler it got at room temp the sweet it got. I will be doing multiple infusions for this one to compare but first impressions are good ones :)

I don’t have any particular flavor or texture descriptors in mind to throw around. I found the tea fresh, bright, incredibly pure (one of my favorite aspects of EoT’s pressings) and light. I thought the qi from this 2011 Nannuo was less immediate and capturing than any of the 2010 tea’s I sampled.

It was good, but I agree with Hobbes, I don’t believe it’s US$72 good. I preferred the Mansai and that tea is ten bucks cheaper. Taking both 2011 teas into mind, I do think it’s fair to say that the quality of these productions has increased. I preferred them both to the three 2010 examples I sampled. At this point, my interest in trying the single cake of the sold-out 2011 Mannuo I managed to acquire could not be much higher.

Very delicate!! Too delicate for the price, though. I expect a Nan nuo to have more floral potency than this, and more astringency too!!

I would have given it a higher rating, but the price is too high for the quality. There are better Nan Nuo teas out there, imho :)
