Golden tips evoke the hot sun of the early June Second Flush Harvest. One of finest producers in the region delivers a beautiful example of what is possible under the right conditions. Slightly heartier and creamier than some whole leaf Assams, this selection picks up deep malty notes of cocoa and subtle fruit.

Just got back from a week’s business trip in Vienna, where I had a chance to pick up some more tea from both Demmers and TeaGschwendner – more reviews coming soon! This particular one is one of a handful of little single serving bags I picked up so I could try a bunch of different kinds and still travel carry-on only. I also haven’t tried to many different Assams and was intrigued by the description of this one being strong with malty notes.
It steeps up to a clear, dark brown liquor, which does have a noticeable sweet and yeasty aroma. The first sip confirms that this is a strong brew – it sports a little peppery tingle, rich malty flavor, and a moderate amount of astringency, probably about 6 out of 10 on the astringency scale. It’s a great Monday morning, shake me out of jet-lag tea. Even without any additives, it’s got a substantial, chewy texture, so I think it would probably hold up to milk and/or sugar pretty well.

I found I liked this tea very much. It has a lighter flavor then say the Irish Breakfast from TeaGschwendner. This is my husbands favorite, he likes his teas robust. For me I really liked the cocoa and malty flavors that came through. I generally do not put sugar into many of my teas, but at times I found it to enhance the malty, cocoa taste. It’s even good with a little cream.
I think I have almost tried all of TeaGschwendner’s Assam teas. This one I got as a sample in my order.
I put this one on par with their number one selling Assam Mokalbari. It’s rich, layered, and multi-dimensional. I have had their other assams, where they are one note, and just blah.
This one is Second Flush FTGOP1. I like it better than the others since it does have the maltiness I look for in an Assam. Low level of astringency. Just a perfect cup of black tea one would want.
