From Tea Trekker

This hand-made, hand-rolled 2nd Flush tea is simply called ‘Silver Tips’. It is a special production from the biodynamic Makaibari Tea Estate, and is extremely limited in quantity. Its flavor profile is remarkable and is among the finest Darjeeling manufactures of this or any other season.

Makaibari Estate is one of the leading tea gardens in Darjeeling. Their work in sustainability and eco-friendly tea garden cultivation technique makes their tea highly desirable, and we are thrilled to support their efforts and to bring this tea to our Darjeeling-loving customers.

Silver Tips first draws you in with its enticing aromatic style. Clean, minerally, and with a rain-soaked riverstone quality that is quite distinctive, the aroma of this tea readies the palate for a taste treat. The first sip is very clean, crisp and smooth. Silver Tips has the trademark Makaibari flavor profile, but in a subtle, stylish presentation. The classic Makaibari 2nd Flush taste profile: a cinnamon-like spiciness, and muscat grape notes in the aroma – is restrained but solid.

There is a melon rind dryness in the aftertaste that lingers pleasantly on the palate for quite some time. Though soft in style, no coaxing of flavor is required from this leaf. As with all the 2nd Flush offerings from Makaibari this season, Silver Tips fills the mouth with busy sensibility.

As one expects with a hand-rolled tea, the leaf is exceptionally large and well-folded. The leaves are individual and distinctive in appearance, showing expert rolling and drying. The dry leaf is classically dark and rich in color, showing shades of umber and mahogany that we rarely see in a contemporary Darjeeling. The silvery tips are prominent and offer delightful highlights to the large leaf. This leaf has none of the ‘German green’ style that is popular right now, particularly in many 1st Flush Darjeeling gardens.

The dry leaf is among the most gorgeous I’ve ever seen and highly unusual for a darjeeling. The picture doesn’t accurately represent the length and thickness of the leaves. Both the wet and dry leaf have a strong aroma of soybeans, also unusual for this type of tea. The soybean remains in the flavor along with the classic muscatel taste. There’s absolutely no astringency or bitterness—the tea is incredibly smooth and drinkable. I’m still trying to decide whether it’s too subtle for my personal darjeeling preferences. It doesn’t grab your attention; instead, you must bring your attention to the tea in the same way some music can remain in the background, but once you listen closely, you realize how great the music is.

nice I heard there weren’t too many second flush darjeelings this year due to the drought

Doug F

There weren’t, but Tea Trekker has a few intriguing ones. I ordered their second flush from the Sourenee estate and it’s a really excellent tea. I’ll log it soon.
