From Tao Tea Leaf

Jin Jun Mei is an extraordinary black tea made from only the buds of wild tea bushes grown at very high elevations. It is grown by the same tea garden that produces lapsang souchong. This is an extremely rare and amazing tea. The dry leaves consist entirely of buds which give the brew a floral and fruity taste. The buds are plucked from a wild species of the camellia sinensis plant that is grown at extremely high elevations, around 1500-1800 meters above sea level . Jin Jun Mei has a charming natural sweetness accompanied by its medium bodied texture, is smooth and has a complex symphony of flavours, sweet and fruity tastes alongside floral hints.

Region: Tongmu Village, Fujian Province, China.

Other Names: Jin Jun Mei Lapsang Souchong.

Steeping Guide:

Teaware: Glass or ceramic Gaiwan

Amount: 3g /1½ teaspoons

Temperature: 100°c (212°F)

Steeping Time: 1 to 2 minutes for the first two steeps and 3 to 5 minutes for the third and fourth.

*These steeping directions are for a traditional Gong Fu style tea, if you are brewing this tea in a regular cup we recommend steeping for 2 – 3 minutes. This tea can also been steeped 4 times.

This was one I had two samples of in the travelling tea box but had to take out. It didn’t do much for me when I had it at the shop during Tao’s tasting, but holeeee shamoley was this ever tasty when I made it at work!! yummers.
Perfectly thick and creamy, a little sweet. Oh yeah it really was great. Sadly the second steep hit on that certain peppery note that I so dislike in black asian teas. Oh well.
I may actually restock this one occasionally as a treat.

15019 tasting notes

So..i have a confession to make. Terri, close your eyes and move on to the next tasting note!

…..i don’t like jin jun mei. I’ve had it a couple times now from various companies and i have yet to find a version i like. BUT i received this one as a free sample from tao leaf tea, and another from yezi…so i’m drinking both, side by side to compare the two.

Tao Leaf tea:
-less tea fuzz than Yezi
-smells very similar
-sweetness to this, with the hint of, as IB mentioned, pepper?

Overall not a bad tea, but there are so many others that i’d rather drink.

987 tasting notes

I had this yesterday in-store from Tao himself, and he told me later that he was surprised by my choice since he didn’t recall seeing me in his store before, and he doesn’t consider Jin Jun Mei a “beginner” tea. (Ooh, so flattered!)

I’ve had only one other Jin Jun Mei, and that one had a really rich chocolate/cocoa note. This one was a bit more malty and molasses-like. I don’t know if that’s because of the difference in vendors or because there was a substantial amount of leaf in my cup – far more than when I brew at home. However, it was quite tasty!

I also got a whole bunch of oolong samples that he recommended to me. I told him that I’m not very familiar with oolongs, but that I think I like the darker ones rather than the greener ones.

One of my jinjunmei’s has tons of molasses it actually can be a little intense westerned steeped. I tend to use 5-15s steeps at boiling and enjoy the tea much better that way. I find the flavour profile can vary in this style of tea.
