From Spire Tea

What’s in it
Chinese sencha green tea, coconut and natural flavouring.

How it tastes to us
The tropical taste of coconut and the ocean-like flavour of sencha meet in this tea. The body is enhanced by the coconut, which makes it deliciously creamy. It has a balanced acidity that makes your mouth water. The chinese sencha brings hints of seaweed and mineral notes. With such a lengthy coconut finish, you can really savour this one.

Why we chose it
To showcase that simple flavoured teas can be delicious too. You don’t always have to have a million ingredients.

How we steep it
Like all green teas – careful with the temperature. Steeping with water that is too hot can draw out unwanted bitterness and astringency

When we drink it
Weekend afternoons with friends.

Why we like Spire
Spire Tea is an importer who has made this tasty tea blend available to those of us here in Canada. We mainly stick to tea companies that also sell direct to you, but one of our objectives is to introduce you to teas you would have a tough time finding on your own. That’s why we couldn’t pass up this tea. Spire has a custom blending facility in Argentina and has a team of certified tea sommeliers who have created a great line up of organic, fair trade and rainforest alliance certified teas.

Hmm, this tea tastes quite a bit like coconut oolong, but without the oolongy flavour. That is to say, it’s very much a kind of toasty coconut, which is really quite good! I wish I could taste the green tea a bit more, so next time I’ll lengthen the infusion a bit – I kept it to 2 minutes to prevent any possible astringency, which I did succeed at. This is definitely one of the better coconut greens I’ve tasted though… highly recommend if that’s something you’re looking for.

I feel like this would be a great blending tea for use when coconut flavour is desired (but when oolong is not)… so perhaps that’s what I’ll use it for! Or maybe I’ll ice it. Hmm, the possibilities…

Is this the Amoda blend? I wasn’t sure how to add it as the package said “Amoda” for blender.

Yeah, I saw that too, but then in the little letter it said Spire Tea… so that’s what I put! :P

Backlog:

One of the best coconut teas I’ve ever tasted!

The Chinese Sencha is buttery and sweet and marries well with the creamy sweet notes of the coconut. Slightly vegetative, somewhere between vegetable and seaweed. The coconut is the real star of this tea though – and it is so delicious … if you love coconut, you’ve got to try this tea!

This is a really tasty green tea. I prefer when coconut flavoring is more on the toasty side. This is definitely a more toasty coconut flavor. It is really smooth and I like it a lot. I will try it iced next time and this also might be a really one for a cold brew.
