East Friesia, located on the North Sea, has a per capita tea consumption second only to Ireland. From dusk ’til dawn a large pot of this full-bodied blend of tippy Assams, Sumatra and Java teas is kept warm over a tea light or on the stove of almost every East Friesian home – ready to be enjoyed with cream and rock sugar. This famous tea is our strongest blend.
Recommendations: Use 1 heaping tsp. per 6 oz. cup; heat fresh water to a roaring boil; let steep for 4-5 min. Try with cream and rock sugar.

Taken with a bit of milk, this is a yummy, strong blend. There is a fair amount of mouth-puckering astringency that’s softened by the milk. But it’s not unpleasant and gives a nice “bite”. The brewed aroma is mouthwatering roasty and malted—almost cocoa-like (but I don’t taste cocoa).
A pretty good, satisfying breakfast blend!
I was looking for a strong breakfast tea this morning…. Man, this one will put hairs on your chest for sure! I probably over steeped, and did not even consider adding milk before I dumped it (which is a shame, because I needed the tea for morning clarity to think of the milk first….). This is for the Irish Breakfast lovers on a day they want something stronger! And perhaps it is a good thing this one is not a love, as SpecialTeas is no more.
Thank you to Batrachoid for the sample and reminding me that I am pretty soft when it comes to tea! I like mine smooth enough to forgo the milk. I might just resteep this, for the sake of scientific experimentation, and I will remember the milk!
I tried the one from Harney and Sons and it was pretty good. It wasn’t too terribly strong, but was in the vein of Irish Breakfast as you say. I think maybe the particles were not as small? But I agree, strong assams make my tummy rumble and I like a tea that is good straight, even if I do add milk and sugar in the mornings!
Had a mug of this today from a sampler packet I recently got. It’s the second time I’m sampled it. It claims to be a 2008 winner of some award so I figured it must be good. It is a strong blend as they claim. I’m not sure if I put too much leaf into my brew but it was strong, a bit too strong for my liking. Given it has Assam as one of the primary leaf varietals I steeped it 2:15 minutes and it still came out with quite a bit of astringency. It’s got a interesting malty and earthy flavor that I’m thinking their suggestion for adding milk might be in order. I also think rock sugar or at least raw sugar or Turbinado sugar might enhance this further. It was a bold wake up tea and while not a favorite I will give it some more tries making sure I measure it more carefully next time and try it with milk and sugar.

You might want to try “Earl Grey de la Creme” by specialteas – it’s an amazing milk & sugar cuppa – and I see you’ve tried another vanilla earl grey, so it might be up your alley…
I absolutely love vanilla earl grey and I’m almost all out of mine so I’ll definitely give it a go!
Definitely a strong tea. A little too bitter for me, I will need to try steeping for less time. Not bad, but I prefer more of the malty Assam flavor in my breakfast blends. But if you are looking for a good wake-up tea, this gets the job done. Prepared with a lot of almond milk and stevia (to counteract the bitterness).
Very strong, bold tea best served with a small splash of cream and sugar. Really, one of the only teas with an astringency that I enjoy (probably from the Assam SpecialTeas uses for this blend) as it comes through whatever is added to it.
Not for the faint of heart, it will wake your ass up and make you feel good about life for a while. Great substitute for morning coffee and highly recommended as the big gun of your arsenal.
