From Sanne Tea

Many tea drinkers may not know much about Taiwanese Assam Black Tea. In 1925, to promote the Taiwanese Black Tea market, the colonial Japanese government introduced the Assam tea strain from Assam Valley to Taiwan. They then chose the Yuchi Township to start the first experiential cultivation, and shortly spread the tea strain to the whole Sun Moon Lake area. This area is at an elevation of 600-800 meters, with moist weather and suitable temperature between day and night. The agricultural environment is very similar to the Assam Valley of India, and is in perfect conditions for growing the best quality Assam Black Tea.

In 1936, the Yuchi Black Tea Experimental Station was founded to refine the quality of Assam Black Tea and promote the Assam Black Tea cultivation in Yuchi Township. Before long, the Taiwanese Assam Black Tea became a huge hit on the British tea market. The West was so surprised that this fantastic Black Tea came from a tiny island. Assam Black Tea became very precious, and only the Japanese royal family and high-ranking officers could enjoy it. In 1937, the first time in the history, the production of Black Tea outnumbered the sum of production of all other teas in Taiwan.

Our Assam tea is from the same Assam strain imported by the Japanese government from India. Older trees root deeper in the ground than newer trees, and absorb more nutrition, making them stronger and growing healthier tea leaves. All tea leaves were hand-picked by experienced workers, who only picked the finest tips. Then, the tender tips were transformed by tea masters into savory and mellow Assam Black Tea.

High-quality Assam Black Tea, when brewed, is a bright burgundy color with full-bodied taste. The tea has a nose of sweet toffee and fresh rose petals. To avoid astringent bitterness, the tea masters steeped Assam Black Tea for shorter time, and the tea will release perfect malty, apricot-like, and earthy aromas. After a century’s improvement, Taiwanese Assam Black Tea has built its own characters different from the maternal strain. If you are a Black Tea admirer, you can’t miss this Taiwanese Assam Black Tea!
