峨眉碧潭飘雪

Harvest
July 2021

Origin
Emei, Sichuan

A most elegant tea from the magnificent and mysterious Emei Mountain in Sichuan, a beautiful province in Southwestern China that is famous for it’s spicy food and giant pandas. Emei mountain is known as a sacred mountain for its ancient Buddhist temples and abundance of ancient tea trees scattered throughout. The magnificent Emei Mountain stands up in the clouds at more than 1000m elevation.

There are six famous teas from Emei Mountain that are used for Zen meditations, and Jasmine Snow Flake is one of them.

Jasmine Snow Flake has an elegant and poetic name in Chinese—碧潭飘雪, loosely translating into “tranquil snow fall over jade pond”. The name conveys the beautiful imagery and experience of brewing this tea. The green tea leaves line the bottom of the teapot while the white jasmine flowers float above, resembling white lotus blossoms. White lotus has always been respected as a sacred object in Buddhism, a symbol of Grand Concentration. Growing out of mud, the lotus flower emerges pure and untainted.

In making the finest jasmine tea, each ingredient and step is of paramount importance: the base green tea, jasmine flowers, and the scenting process. For our Jasmine Snow Flake the base green tea is Emei Spring Maofeng, a delicate and tender first harvest green tea from tea gardens at the peak of Emei Mountain. The jasmine flowers are from the small village of Jiajiang, known for the best jasmine flowers in Sichuan.

Scenting was done in small batches entirely by hand. The green tea is spread out thinly on bamboo mats with fresh jasmine flowers scattered in between. The tea slowly absorbs the fragrance and aromatic oils from the flowers for 8 hours. The next morning, the flowers are sifted off, the tea is dried over charcoal and sits for two days to ready for the next round of scenting. This Jasmine Snow Flake went through five rounds of scenting. The entire process taking more than two weeks to complete.

Drinking this tea is a multi-sensory experience, like watching a symphony orchestra. The smell, the imagery, and the taste are all in perfect harmony, creating a complete experience where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This tea is uplifting and enchanting for the body, mind and soul. It is intensely aromatic and sweet, like drinking a bouquet of fresh jasmine flowers.
