From Chroma Tea

Shu pu’er tea blended with burdock root, chrysanthemum, cardamom, coriander, and tulsi.

Shu Pu’er with chrysanthemum is one of the most classic and traditional flavor pairings out there, something you’ll find at any Fujianese Dim Sum establishment. The bright sparkling high notes of chrysanthemum round out the deep dessert-like qualities of good shu pu’er so perfectly. For Chiffon, we’ve added a bit of cardamom for even more sparkling juicy sweetness, and tulsi to bring out the shu pu’er’s natural herbaceousness.

I’m liking this cup. It’s like a savory chai. The cardamon gives it the impression of chai. Can’t tell what is giving it more savory notes. Caraway? It’s well balanced, but slightly on the airy side. I sipped this cup somewhat mindlessly for most of it, mildly aware I was enjoying it through the slow haze of waking up.

Sipdown! (29 | 29)

So this wasn’t my favorite, just because I’m not a ripe puerh fan. That being said, it was still very enjoyable. The cardamom and the tulsi do a nice job of freshening up the damp earthiness of the puerh and counteracting its slight fishy notes. I don’t actually taste much of the chrysanthemum, but it’s probably just melding with the tulsi since they’re both a bit peppery in flavor.

A nice tea, just not one for my personal preferences. Also the color seems like an odd choice given how earthy and herbaceous this tastes…

This was an interesting one.

All of Chroma Tea’s blends are named after colours/themed around pantones. This one seems to pretty clearly get it’s name and colour from the chrysanthemum flowers in the blend. I mean, the shade of soft buttery yellow is an almost perfect match.

This is also the first Chroma blend I’ve tried where I really felt like the colour/name was deeply unfitting for the profile of the tea. It’s a shou pu’erh base which contributes a very rich full bodied earthiness and woody taste along with a really camphor heavy cooling finish. Aside from that, the strongest flavour was BY FAR the really strong, savory taste of the tulsi which had a sort of pine-y spice to it as well. I drank this tea and I immediately felt like I was outdoors in the woods. Like, the colour of this tea should (in my opinion) almost be more of the shade of green that’s used for Midnight Green or some kind of cool toned brown. Not this soft dainty yellow.

That said, it was very good!
