From Chicago Tea Garden

The pomelo is a citrus fruit native to South East Asia resembling a large grapefruit. These pomelos were hollowed out, the fruit from inside was mixed with oolong tea, then put back in, covered with its own lid, wrapped in wire, slow-dried over a hearth, then allowed to age. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the citrus scent that will fill the room when you first take the top off of your pomelo. Please be careful with the wires, this is probably the only tea you will need a pair of pliers to enjoy. The tea is smooth with bright citrus notes on the finish. You will need to rinse the tea leaves several times with hot water before actually steeping them due to the amount of aging that went into producing these tea-filled pomelos. These pomelos were in the United States in man-made tea caves and great care was given to the environment in which they aged regarding temperature and humidity. These pomelos range in age anywhere from 10-20 years.

This is a very enjoyable pu-erh. I am fairly new to pu-erh but finding the journey adventurous. I got this sample from a friend and opened it up today. Has a nice citrus note with some earthy components. The leaves are very tight and need to be broken up then softened with a rinse then broken up more. 30 sec first steep. Aroma of brew is subtle earthy but no smokiness that I enjoy. Flavor has a bit of citrus followed by dryness then a bit of earth. No pungent flavor or aroma. Great tea but I would like to have a bit of smokieness like other pu’s I have tried.

I loved this tea. It was a new tasting experience. Earthy, citrus, dark, and complex.
