Tea of the Week for October 26, 2015!

just in time for Halloween, here’s the great Pumpkin Houjicha!

Way back when I had been presented with the opportunity to take over 52Teas from its creator – Frank Horbelt – my plan was to create a Count Chocula type of blend for the week of Halloween. But, I really wanted to first create my ultimate Chocolate flavor before I started doing a lot of chocolate varieties so I decided to put my dreams of a Count Chocula tea off for at least a year and instead do something that I had envisioned back when I created my Lemon Cheesecake Bar Houjicha: Pumpkin Houjicha. When I first started blending the Lemon Cheesecake Bar, the first scent that I experienced was that of the roasted green tea. It smelled nutty and sweet and toasty. It smelled like autumn. So my thoughts then turned to pumpkins and well, I decided that I must make a Pumpkin Houjicha!

So here it is! My top-notch Japanese Houjicha flavored with Pumpkin, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. I kept the spices simple because I wanted the Houjicha to be the star of this blend. I added some Calendula petals for some visual interest. I fell in love with this tea at first sip, but don’t take my word for it, check out this review of my Pumpkin Houjicha!

Mmm! This is so good.

One of the things I’m asked often as a Mad Tea Artist is “when are you going to make more flavored Houjicha blends?” Well, I listened and this week, I bring you Pumpkin Houjicha!

So you might be asking yourself – why a pumpkin flavored Houjicha? Well, Houjicha is – in my opinion – a very autumnal tasting tea. That roasty-toasty flavor, that natural nuttiness of the Houjicha just tastes very much like autumn to me. And really, is there another flavor that we associate with fall more than pumpkin? So why not bring these two flavors together?

Well, it’s a stroke of brilliant madness, if I do say so myself, because I’m loving what I’m tasting here. I went light on the spices – just a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg – but I did feel that some spices were called for because pumpkin just doesn’t taste pumpkin-y to me without some sort of spice to bring it to life. The result is a toasty, nutty sweet pumpkin-y tea with just a hint of spice that’s really quite lovely. Seriously – you MUST try this one. If you only try one pumpkin tea this fall – let it be this one. YUM!

To brew: I used my Kati Tumbler (again!) and measured a heaping bamboo scoop of tea into the basket and added 12 ounces of hot water (heated to 180°F) and allowed the tea to steep for 3 minutes. Strain. Add sweetener if that’s the way you like your tea. This isn’t one that really requires sugar – I tried it both with sugar and without. Without sugar, it’s a really tasty blend and I could taste all the elements. Then I tried it with some sugar and found that it brought out the spices a little more and gave the pumpkin some dimension.

Organic ingredients: roasted green tea, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, calendula petals and all-natural flavors.

Steep: 1 1/2 of tea to 12 oz. 180°F water. Steep 2-4 minutes. Allow tea to cool 5-6 minutes after brewing for best flavor.

Another sipdown of a smaller sample. I pulled out the little baggy of this when I cleaned and organised my tea drawer and it’s been waiting for me in a focus box ever since. I love houjicha and kukicha for that sweet, toasty flavour. This is more ashy and herbal than I expected, but I do get some spices (either nutmeg or clove). The woody flavour is pleasant. Overall, I think this would have been a tea that absolutely blew me away of I had tried it a year ago before the flavours faded a bit. I do love houjicha blends and I will buy any houjichas that are made in the future.

Not my favourite, but a reasonably tasty tea. As expected, love the houjicha base. It tastes more like a cinnamon chai than pumpkin/pumpkin spice, though. A good fall tea.

I am so behind in my tasting notes. I have been enjoying lots of tea lately, I just haven’t had the opportunity to sit and log!

Thank you Evol Ving Ness for the sample!

Green tea is my least favourite tea, but this was fairly decent. Not something I would order, but I certainly would not refuse a cup if offered! I’m glad I got to try it.

i am with you on that one!

Another one from evol ving ness this one is a little disappointing. Really nice hojicha flavour but the pumpkin flavouring is insanely subtle. there are hints of cinnamon but overall this is more like a plain hojicha than it is a pumpkin one. Thankfully, i like the tastes, so it’s an enjoyable cup of tea. Thanks evol!

Evol Ving Ness

Yep, I find that often the flavourings require more oomph.

Not so much with the various chai blends but others.

Sipdown (135)!

Thanks Kittenna! I love the idea of flavoured Houjicha; the base just works with so many different kinds of flavours…

I don’t know why, but I brewed this one Gong Fu style in a gaiwan. I think it really boiled down to a matter of convenience; I had all of my Gong Fu supplies upstairs already so I just, you know, went with it. Maybe making this particular tea in that style was a little unconventional, but it sure was tasty!

This had a super strong roasty flavour, as Houjicha often does. I don’t know if I’ve ever tried a Houjicha blend from either Frank or Anne? I know I was really interested in the Lemon Bar Houjicha, but I never got around the trying it. This is the perfect level of roastiness, though! Mmm! I don’t think the pumpkin flavouring is super obvious, it’s more of a subtle pumpkin and cinnamon flavour in the finish. I don’t know if I’d prefer a blatant flavouring or something more subtle like this one?

The flavour fades quickly after two gong fu style infusions; maybe if it was stronger initially the flavour wouldn’t wane so quickly. However, I know that this wasn’t the best way to brew this one initially, so there’s that. And the base does hold up REALLY well after the flavour does fade. So it’s not like it wasn’t enjoyable, anyway.

Conclusion: Yum! I can’t wait to try the other flavoured Houjicha, probably Western style, from Kittenna in the near future.

So, Yunomi sell both a roasted lemongrass herbal and a houjicha-lemongrass blend, which I think sound promising. I’m not big on flavored tea, but I did put these both on my purchase list for this year.

kristinalee

It looks like it’s just the one ingredient — lemongrass — and not a host of chemicals attempting to approach the flavor of lemongrass.

Roswell Strange

Lemon and Houjicha sounds like a good pairing, for sure – though lemongrass in particular is one of my least favourite ingredients used in any tea blend – herbal or otherwise. I’d be much more interested in a houjicha blend that incorporated lemon zest, even though the flavour would likely be more subtle.

kristinalee

Ah, so they wouldn’t work for you then. What about verbena? Lemon zest would be good in a tea…

Evol Ving Ness

Hmm, lemongrass and the roastiness of this base sounds promising, even though I am not a big fan of lemongrass.

I’ve consumed far more sweets and chocolate this week than is good for me, so much in fact that I was craving a straight not sweet tea. As the day is drawing to a close, I also needed something that wouldn’t jack me up on caffeine, so that ruled out many of the things that I would reach for.

And bingo! Perfect choice.

Recently, I came across a website that suggests steeping Houjicha with boiling water. (Others claim that 195 or so is a good temperature.) I went with boiling. Previously, I had been steeping with lower temperatures.

Life-changing, I tell you. Reduces the sharp bite and replaces it with roasted caramel notes. The tea still has a bit of sourness, but I am finding it far more pleasant than before.

And a good thing too because into the sip down target basket it goes. Such a great thing when one finally finds one’s way around a tea.

Not loving this one as much today. It tastes watered down and weak. I think it must be something to do with the way I steeped it, not with the tea itself, because I enjoyed it the last time I had it just a couple months ago. I am tasting the spices this time around though!

Hello all! Hope you’ve had a great weekend! I’m almost back to the world of tea again. My mom and I made all the flowers for the wedding this weekend out of coffee filters and crepe papers. They look fantastic! Now just have to get the license and the party bus and we are set!

While I was making the flowers, my dad and I had some tea time. Since this tea will officially be hitting the site on October 26th, I thought yesterday would be a great day to try it.

This tea reminds me of pumpkin seeds. Roasted delicious sweet pumpkin seeds with a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon. Really good. I’ve already been told I have to stick to my buying hiatus on this one, but I’d love to get a bigger size. I just adore the roasted flavor mixed with the flavors of a pumpkin pie.

Happy Monday all!
