From 52teas

Okay, one more white tea to post. As I mentioned, I accidentally ordered too much Bai Mu Dan, so we have crafted a couple of extra white tea blends this week.

This one was a request from a former employee, Ramona, who asked me repeatedly to create it. I just felt like spiced pear was never as exciting as some of the other crazy blends we were creating, so I never got around to it. Well, I never forgot about it either, so here it is. This one is for you, Ramona!

Used the last of the pouch for a few hot cups on this cold night. I’m in a sweatshirt and jeans with a fleece blanket and my husband has shorts and a tee shirt on and is sweating. Hot spicy tea for me, iced watermelon tea for him :)

Paul M Tracy

How does the pear hold up in this blend? It’s such a delicate flavor that it’s typically difficult to faithfully reproduce.

Cofftea

I’m seriously considering caving, but it was the TOTW so long ago I seriously question its freshness.

Meghann M

The pear comes through nicely, it is covered up a bit by the spices, especially when brewed in the hotter range of temperature, but it is definitely there. I taste it more in this pear than in Adagio’s white pear.

Meghann M

I bought and opened it several weeks ago, and drank most of it in the last few weeks, I didn’t think it tasted stale or anything. I think I will buy another pouch as it’s the only pear white tea I’ve found I like!

I ordered this one a while back, but I hadn’t tried it yet… so I thought it was about time!

I have a tremendous fondness for white tea. And this one is very good. I have read of many a displeasure on Steepster when it comes to white pear teas, but this one has a very pleasing pear flavor, and it is nicely accented with cinnamon and cloves.

Very good tea. I don’t know how this would fair as an iced tea – the flavors might be a bit too delicate for iced tea. But it does make a pleasing hot tea for later in the evening.

Erin

It actually tastes like pear?

LiberTEAS

Yes, it actually tastes like pear with cinnamon and cloves… like maybe a baked pear with spices.

As someone who has flavored/blended teas for quite some time, I can say that pear is a difficult flavor to achieve because if you think about it, the flavor of the fruit itself is rather subdued. But I think that 52 Teas did a really good job with this one.

Erin

i totally agree! i’ve tried several teas that are supposed to taste like pears, but i keep striking out. i’ll definitely try this, though!

LiberTEAS

Erin: If you’d like, I can send you a sampling of it. :) Just PM me with your address.

This isn’t a strongly-scented tea, but white teas generally aren’t. What I can smell is surprisingly authentic – delicate stewed pear with a wiff of spices. Like the scent the flavour is light and dainty. The pear seems like the primary element and it isn’t fake like some fruit flavourings can come across. I think I might like it if the spices were a little bit stronger – I’ll steep the next cup a bit long.

Thanks to Meghann M, I get to try another of Frank’s blends!!

This is quite close to being the palest tea I’ve ever sipped. The scent is mainly white tea, with a hint of pear. It’s very faint (in fact, you almost have to stick your nose in it to get a good whiff).

The taste is incredible. It tastes like a baked pear drizzled with cinnamon-caramel syrup. It’s not a heavy flavor; you can still taste the Bai Mu Dan tea underneath the warmth of the pear/cinnamon. I can see myself starting many a fall morning with this tea. Can’t wait to see how a second steep turns out.

I haven’t actually tried this one myself, kinda giving myself a break on the white teas, as I’ve been craving more caffeine. I’ll have to bring this out soon as your description makes it sound so great for this season!

Jaime

You definitely need to bring it out! Seems like we have similar tastes, so I’m sure you’re going to love this. It’s even good cold…I got a phone call and my second cup got completely cold. I didn’t even try heating it up, it was so good. I’m going to be buying this one for sure, and am really hoping it becomes one of the permanents!

Hahahaha this is like drinking potpourri! I used to have such a thing for pear teas (after trying one in France during high school). The love has waned a bit though. This one tastes mostly of the cinnamon and clove, and while that sounds delicious to me in theory- in practice I feel as though I’ve licked the walls of an Olde Tyme Americana Crafts store. Maybe I’ll stick the rest of this in my sock drawer to scent my socks. It’s that kinda smell, you know? :)

p.s. I just had an odd conversation. I told a girl that I drink at least 4-5 cups of tea a day and she was shocked. I told her I know she drinks at least that much between the soda and energy drinks she’s always guzzling, and for me it’s just a matter of filling my days with tea and sparkling water (and the occasional coffee) instead of other beverages. She didn’t understand in the slightest. Oh, Americans.

Kristin

Yeah, I really wanted to like this one. I like the Black Currant so much and I like pear so I thought I would love it… but eh.

Cofftea

You should see the looks I get when I tell people that I drink about 80oz of tea a day.

Cofftea

This is one that, even inspite of the ratings, I say “it CAN’T be that bad…”- I hope I get this one in my box!:)

Lisbet

Ha, I really like to have a beverage at all times- it’s like my equivalent of a smoking habit, except healthy! I mean I really don’t consume very much caffeine at all.

Cofftea

Well I resteep a lot too so I don’t consume as much as it may seem either lol.

This tea is ok, but not one of my favorites.

The smell of the tea in the bag is something akin to potpourri. I was a little scared. I brewed it as directed (160 F) and got mostly hot water taste. So I brewed it again at boiling temp and got much better flavor out of it. I tried it unsweetened and didn’t like it much and then I sweetened it pretty well with agave nectar and the pear flavor started to pop. This has a nice pear flavor and definitely has spice. I taste cinnamon and I think cloves. Luckily it tastes much better than it smelled in the bag.

Hmmm when I think potpourri I think floral and not spice. Would it taste good iced maybe?

Kristin

No, the potpourri was the pre-brewed smell of the leaves. Once brewed the flavor is pear and spice. I don’t think it would work as an iced tea.

I was SO tired last night that I set this tea to steep, promptly forgot about it and left it steeping all night while I went to bed. I awoke this morning to a very fragrant cup of Spiced Pear tea. Not wanting this delicious tea to go to waste I decided to go ahead and try it. Surprisingly it doesn’t taste overdone or bitter. The cinnamon is quite strong but it also backed up by a sweet, refreshing pear. I wouldn’t purposely recreate this pot of tea, but I think I’ll make it through the cup.

Cofftea

You could just add lots of extra water to salvage it as well.

I think I got the last packet of this, which I’ll use as an explanation for the slight flavor of dustiness. I’m used to white teas being subtle, but I could have done with more flavor in this blend overall. I brewed according to the parameters, and for the longest recommended steep time, but I’m still getting, at most, a sort of suggestion of spice and pear in the back of the sip rather than any appreciable taste. Oh well, at least white tea is good for you!

I decided to try this tea… I was in the mood for a light flavored tea and this hit the spot. When you open up the package all I could smell was cinnamon and a hint of clove… now it wasn’t super strong to burn your nose but you could definitely smell it. As far as the pear is concerned I did not smell it when I opened up the package.

I steeped it and sweetened it just a bit and the first sip was very soothing and mellow cinnamon… I thought that this would be perfect on a cold wintery day… sitting in front of the fire. I let it cool a bit and sure enough there was the pear flavoring mingling with the white tea, cinnamon and clove. It was the last taste left on my tongue and it left my mouth feeling juicy! I don’t know how Frank does it but I am super impressed with his teas!

I personally like to ice white teas but I am not sure if I would like to ice this one with the spices in it?!?!?! Not sure but may have to try it sometime! I am super glad I got this tea.

I ordered this tea on Tuesday of this week and today Friday, I have my tea. WOW! I am impressed with the super lightening fast delivery:) (I am still waiting on my GM order which I placed several days before this one…I hate waiting for teas to come in the mail, but when they do: Happy Dance!)
This tea is incredible. Delicate pear tea with a hint of spice that is oh so pleasing on my tongue. I almost did not order this, I am soooo glad I did:)
