I live off coffee (and I’m trying to change that!) and when I told the guy working at DAVIDsTEA this, he took this tea out. It smelled amazing, like chocolate and coffee, so I decided to get it.
I’ve tried this so many times before, and each time was a major disappointment. To be fair, it was one of the first teas I tried, and at the time, I may not have been steeping it correctly, since I was new to this whole ‘tea thing’. Many months later, I’ve made myself plenty of tea and found that steeping it properly really does make all the difference. So I decided to give Coffee Pu’erh another chance.
According to some suggestions below, I decided to rinse the leaves for 5 seconds and to steep it for less time (4 minutes as opposed to 6) to see if it would make a difference. Thankfully, it’s slightly more drinkable—but still very earthy. Not a flavour to write home about IMO. I don’t get any hints of caramel (or sweetness, for that matter), but I do get a bit of bitterness of dark chocolate (which is nice). I thought it would help to add milk and sugar since that’s how I like my coffee, but each time I’ve tried it, it’s tasted much worse than drinking it straight.
I would not purchase this again. I’ll definitely stick to coffee if I want a coffee flavour. Coffee Pu’erh really doesn’t cut it from a coffee-lover’s point of view, sorry!
