Cold Brew Sipdown (343)!

This is my second cold brew from Story of My Tea; the first one wasn’t a huge success for me but this one was significantly better.

It reminds me a lot of DT’s Mango Fruit Punch, but lighter on the mango. Of course, that does make a fair bit of sense because there’s quite a bit of ingredient overlap between the two blends. I’d say the bulk of this is very candied tasting pineapple notes and sweet tangerine. There’s nothing really acidic or tangy to it; it’s a very sweet brew with really sugary undertones to all the different tropical fruit notes. Not cloying though; just sweet. The tangerine is fairly distinctly tangerine but does venture a little into a bit of generic orange juice sort of territory.

So to sum up: very sweet candied fruit notes that are tropical overall and mainly a mix of pineapple, tangerine, and mango. Enjoyable, and refreshing!

Sipdown (344)!

Thank you VariaTEA for the sample!

There wasn’t quite enough here to Gong Fu so I opted for a large Western style mug of it instead. I was very quickly taken aback by it though; this is so incredibly smokey for a Golden Monkey tea! I mean, that’s not to say it’s incredibly smokey in general – it’s just that I’ve never experienced smoke notes like this from a Golden Monkey. I’m glad to see, skimming the other reviews on Steepster, that I’m not the only one to get that flavour from the liquor though. So basically; this is smokey in the top and trailing into the body, with notes of malt and cocoa. The finish is a little more like what I’d expect from a Golden Monkey though – sweeter with jammy stonefruit notes and a honey sweetness.

I mean, I did enjoy it but it was so weird and out of character that I just don’t know what exactly to make of it from this taste alone…

VariaTEA

Totally forgot I sent you this one. Glad you also got smoke because this had me scratching my head given it was so unexpected.

drank Wild Strawberry by DAVIDsTEA
16396 tasting notes

I’ve been craving this one all week, but we’re sold out of it at my store so I haven’t been able to drink it on shift. I finally caved, and broke into the sachet box I had at home. I’d been saving it to bring along with me on the vacation I’m going on end of the month but nabbing one of the tea bags out of the box couldn’t hurt…

This is only the second DT blend I’ve tried in the sachet style bags, but I had the same issue with it that I experienced with the Raspberry Cream Pie sachets I had earlier this summer: it was fairly weak/mild compared to the other times I’ve tried this one. Not bad though; just a strong rosemary flavour with very light vanilla notes and a somewhat watered down strawberry flavour. Very tart finish though.

Yeah; every time I drink this one I notice the rosemary more and more. That’s totally not a bad thing – in fact, I think I fall a little more in love with that part of the flavour and subsequently the blend itself. A little more vanilla wouldn’t hurt, though.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Are you using enough tea bags?

Today’s cold brew – but admittedly not a very good one. It’s hard to place exactly what about it was off though; it was kind of fruity, a little mango like for sure. It just had a very funky sort of finish/aftertaste that was… off.

Bleh. I’ve not had much luck with cold brews as of late.

Had a baby cup of this earlier in the day, while I was getting ready for work.

Very, very smooth profile – I was actually a little surprised I could taste it so clearly! It’s not that it’s lacking in flavour, I’m just coming off that cold now and I thought that there was a chance that I wouldn’t pick up on the flavours of this one. I don’t know that my palate is completely back to normal yet?

Anyway, it tasted like a hot cucumber water infusion, but with sweet and smooth straw/hay notes as well. Really peaceful, relaxing with a crisp/clear top note and clean finish. Light bodied overall, but leaning into being something a little more medium bodied.

Smooth, sweet, and creamy.

I’m sipping on this one right now while exploring the new album that Poppy just dropped. Really enjoying the two songs I’ve made it through so far – and while I didn’t intentionally pair this tea with the album (because the album drop was a total surprise to me) I have to say that the soft, delicate vanilla and creamy lemon notes of this tea are actually pretty perfectly meshing with the music!

Poppy’s voice is really soft and light/bubbly. I mean, her whole aesthetic is this sort of vaporwave/pastel goth sort of thing? It’s hard to describe.

Anyway this is the song I’m listening to: https://youtu.be/gfuQDsyvKak

Suffice to say that if you’ve heard Poppy’s music or tried this tea you’d understand how the two match up/line up perfectly together!

Lexie Aleah

Is it very citrus-y like or fruity?

Roswell Strange

Pretty lemony, but more of a sweet/creamy lemon rather than acidic or tangy.

Maddy Barone

I don’t care very much for the woody edge of rooibos. I believe the green rooibos isn’t as woody, so maybe this tea avoids that. Is that the case, Ms. Strange? Because this one sounds yummy, but I don’t like rooibos.

Roswell Strange

Definitely A LOT less woody than your typical rooibos, but there is a slight taste of it IMO so it’s not completely free of that taste.

Maddy Barone

well, darn. maybe 52Teas or another will come up with a honeybush version. :)

This leaf is getting old, but it’s holding up well. Hopefully I’ll finish it off this winter.

Hot mug of this with a splash of milk; it was something nice to sip on Monday night when the boyfriend was over for supper/meeting my mom. Calm, sweet, and relaxing…

Top and body notes of cherry alongside creaminess both in flavour and mouthfeel, from the milk. Soft, candied ginger undertones throughout the whole sip. Maltier finish. Didn’t taste the almond at all this time around.

drank Super Detox by Saje
16396 tasting notes

This was my last tea of the day, yesterday.

I’ve had this a few times now where the chili has been either really present or really absent. While I enjoy the profile and simplicity of this one overall, I don’t love the inconsistency in flavour. I mean, it has three ingredients!? I should in theory be able to taste all of them, right? Last night, I really only tasted the peppermint and lemon myrtle again – but I half want to give this the benefit of the doubt too, since I’m sick and I think my ability to taste is probably only at like 70% its normal capacity right now…

Regardless, the tea did the thing I was wanting it to: it relaxed me, and had me out like a light not even ten minutes after finishing the mug.

drank Throat Rescue by DAVIDsTEA
16396 tasting notes

I was drinking this one the other day because my throat was really killing me. You know, the whole ‘cold, but only half a cold’ sort of thing I’ve been fighting off all week. I added a half a spoon of Cold 911 to the leaf too though, for a bit of extra mint/eucalyptus punch since my nose is stuffed up too. Also, some honey. It didn’t really make me feel any better overall though, sadly. Flavour wise, it was also REALLY licorice root heavy, which just isn’t really my thing.

Oh well; can’t say I’m not trying to get rid of this stupid cold/throat situation…

I had a whole tasting note written out for this, and then Steepster ate it. So to summarize: Was craving something tart and fruity, this fit the bill…

It had notes of cranberry, hibiscus, tart/sour apple, and fruit punch. None of those things are unusual for this tea, but the fruit punch notes got me thinking. Both of DT’s ‘Punch’ like blends (Caribbean Crush and ME to WE) have cranberry as a main ingredient, which is possibly why the cranberry in this tea reminds me of fruit punch? It’s one of those chicken and egg kind of questions though:

Did cranberry start getting added to blends because it’s fruit punch like in flavour? Or do I find it fruit punch like because it’s used in punch themed teas?

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
