Yahoo Shine names iced tea mixes & prepared iced tea #7 of "8 foods you should never buy again"

Of course like what you drink and drink what you like and I always think bottled tea (if I can find it unsweetened) is better than no tea at all, but the article makes a couple good points. I’m SO glad to see an article actually promoting iced tea made w/ real tea (bagged in this case). I also never thought about adding fruit juice to tea. And who isn’t looking for ways to make your tea budget stretch?:)

I’m diabetic, so I avoid most prepared foods and drinks. Especially garbage sweetened with corn syrup.

“Have you heard what they say about corn syrup?”… lol I know and totally get your point, I just can’t resist quoting the line from the commercial anytime someone mentions HFCS. I definitely agree that it’s a health issue and not just a financial issue as is their focus.

My biggest issue with this particular article is that they really should promote loose leaf tea. What they’re promoting is inexpensive bagged tea – and generally, that stuff has been sitting on grocery store shelves for months and possibly years – and it gives good tea a bad image.

But, I do agree that it is better to brew a batch of iced tea rather than buy bottled or that horrible powdered stuff. I very rarely buy bottled tea/canned tea unless something happens to catch my eye, or if I’m out and about and I am thirsty (like cofftea said, bottled tea is better than no tea at all), but, I so prefer the stuff I can make at home, knowing that my water is fresh and filtered, and that the tea that I use is tasty tea, and if I choose to sweeten it, I know how much I’ve put in and the quality of the sweetener.

Completely agree. But as ayou said in your 2nd paragraph- bagged is better than bottled.

And when using the cold brewed method, it is certainly easy to prepare iced tea..

Cofftea said

Easy, maybe, but the regular method is faster and just as easy.

shrug I drink powdered tea. I drink it a lot, actually.

http://steepster.com/teas/lipton/6715-white-tea-to-go-apple-cranberry

It’s made of white and green tea powder. It does have sugar and artificial stuff in it, though, so it’s not totally ideal, but I like it.

Let’s please refrain from descriptors like “horrible” to describe choices that others have made, hmm?

@denisend I am sorry to have offended you. Wasn’t my intention at all to do so. I know that some people do like it, and you are correct, I shouldn’t say it’s horrible. I guess I became something of a tea snob in the last 15 years or so.

And, actually, I should add that I do have a Rishi Genmaicha powdered tea. It’s made from fine ground genmaicha … and it really isn’t that terrible.

I just clicked on your link, and I really couldn’t drink that – again, not intending to offend – but because it has aspartame, it would make me very sick. I am so very allergic to aspartame.

I wanna try muzi’s stone ground white tea… although since the only way I like cold matcha is w/ OJ I’m not sure it will live up to my expectations. Using their black version in chai mixes would be pretty sweet too.

There’s nothing wrong with “I don’t like this”! Nothing wrong with that at all! I just object when you put a value judgment on it.

This is interesting. My husband loves unsweetened iced tea – we normally brew it from scratch (using tea bags…yes..Lipton :-O), but we bought a canister of the powder to have “in case of emergency.” My parents used to drink the powdered stuff, and I don’t remember it being bad when I tried it. We got Lipton decaf..and it is awful! I’m not sure if it’s just a bad batch, or if that’s what all of it tastes like. It never quite seems to dissolve, and it doesn’t really taste like tea at all. I guess it’s not that hard to put the kettle on, but it seems like there should be a powdered product that isn’t gross.

i love drinking crystal light iced tea. It makes so much tea in one go and it takes minimal effort. I’ve tried to make iced tea from loose teas but it seems to take so much time, and i can never really make a big quantity of it at once, and sometimes I just fail :(

Kathryn Ann, it should actually not take you any more time to make a large batch of loose iced tea than it does 1 cup of hot loose tea. Here’s an example scenario: Let’s say you want to make a gallon of green tea and you like your green tea in a ratio of 3g/8oz cup and you like it steeped for 3 min in 175 degree water. 1 gallon makes 16 cups. So you’ll need 48 grams of tea. Pour just enough water heated at normal steeping temp over the leaves so they are completely covered and can steep properly. Let’s say for figuring this takes 2 cups. Let steep and decant. Then pour 112 ounces of cold water in the jug. It is now cold enough to be quite refreshing to drink, refrigerate to make even colder. A gallon of iced tea in 3 min plus however long it takes you to heat the water =P This amount should also make 2-3 gallons w/ resteeping. You could also use some of the next steep to make iced tea cubes to chill your next gallon.

hmm wouldn’t the tea get really watered down with that method? hmmm. i’ll try it at some point hahah. I also don’t have any type of pitcher to use besides my teapot, which hardly fits into my baby fridge. maybe when I get out of my college room I’ll make it more, but it’s such an effort with the resources i have right now :x

No cuz I don’t put ice in it- it gets plenty chilled for my preferences by being refrigerated. If you like ice, just use one of the other infusions to make tea iced cubes- or make them from a different tea and mix and match flavors. Yummy!=D

My biggest issue is the HFCS people think a healthy alternative to soda is green tea in a bottle, WRONG…I dont have an issue with people drinking what they like and if its an inferior tea fine I do that, but to put that type of sugar in your body….Bad news.

Kaitlin S said

You can get it unsweetened (or artificially sweetened), but it still tastes off to me. I think it’s the citric acid that’s always added, and the processing probably messes with the flavor too. Maybe a brand besides Lipton might be more tea-like, though.

I agree VegTea. I’ve only had 2 unsweetened RTD teas. Subway’s is actually pretty good considering it’s black (or is it a mix of green and black) and I don’t like non chai black tea- but Adagio’s white was HORRIBLE which is a shame cuz I MUCH prefer a white tea over black.

I think Subway serves Fuze tea, which is supposedly “brewed fresh” daily http://www.subwayfreshbuzz.com/menu/fuze_tea/

Yep that’s the suprisingly good stuff. They can also be found here:

Oh this whole article is very nice! Besides the 8 foods, there are additional 7 foods that you should never buy again. I like it! Nowadays newspapers and magazines are loaded with articles telling you what to buy and where to spend your money. We need more of this kind of “not to buy” articles! Out of the 15 foods, the only thing that I have to buy is gourmet ice-cream :-p But I do just as the author said, buy only when it’s on sale :-D
