I was born in the UK, and so was practically weaned on tea. I’m old enough to remember a time when most of the tea sold there was loose leaf, and teabags were strange and new. I spent the early part of my childhood pasting PG Tips picture cards into their albums…
I first encountered Chinese teas when I embarked on a weight loss program several years ago. I figured that green tea was a good option when I decided to cut milk out of my diet, and went to my local Chinese supermarket to see what they had in.
I left with a packet of green gunpowder, as well as some Oolong, and, perhaps most importantly, 250 grams of loose leaf shou Pu-erh.
A week later I went back and bought a gaiwan, and the rest, as they say, is history…
