From Yunnan Sourcing

An incredibly fantastic raw Pu-erh made from Wild Pu-erh tree leaves that have a dark purple color. This 野生茶 (Wild Tea) is naturally dark in color, and is heavy in anti-oxidants and catechins.

Ye Sheng "野生“ varietal aka “Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze var. assamica (J. Masters) Kitam.” is a primeval varietal that pre-dates Camellia Sinensis var. Assamica and is a naturally occuring non hybridized varietal. It’s potency in cha qi arises from it’s unadulterated nature. It is naturally bug repellent, and grows wild in the forests of Yunnan at an altitude of 1600-2200 meters.

The quality of the leaves and the meticulous processing ensures excellent storage and aging potential. The infused liquor is bright and is almost completely without bitterness. There is strong full taste in the mouth and a warm stimulating feel in the mouth and body after drinking this tea.

A unique tea for sure. Strangely enough though, the same characteristics that I like so much in YS’s Ye Sheng black teas, don’t do it for me in this sheng. I can imagine that the profile becomes more likeable over time, but I am not going to invest in this tea in order to find out. Maybe in a few years time, I will try get hold of some sample that’s been aged more.

This tastes exactly like the Yunnan Sourcing’s Dehong Ye Sheng 2013 100 g brick. It has those typical robust, sharp notes of the northern wild purple tea tree variety: tannin, camphor, deep sweet forest greens, pine, raw brussle sprouts, medicinal, minerals, and a long sweet finish. I specify northern since I’m told that young purple pu’ers from the more southerly region of Yiwu and surrounding areas are more mellow.

It’s freshness and flavor profile when young makes northern purple raw pu’er somewhat akin to a rustic green tea with a lot of edge. Personally, I think these purple teas taste better with a few years on them, but they are quite different from their green leaved counterparts and very refreshing.

One of the most peculiar teas I’ve ever had. If a tea makes you stop what your doing and think about it, its a good tea. This tea made me stop everything and tune in to what the heck this taste/smell was
