Gongfu!
This sheng is pretty peculiar in the fact it’s actually charcoal roasted, and of coarse I just had to try it because there’s nothing I love more than weird and experimental! It certainly lives up to its description of being unique, though I’m still undecided on whether that’s a good thing or not. Initial steeps were pretty heavily roasty with a lot of upfront bitterness and char notes; it also lingered in a strange way on the back of my tongue. Though this tea session seemed a bit rough and choppy for a while there, I did originally hit a short lived sweetspot around infusion four or five where the unbalanced notes had settled into something sweeter and more syrupy that make me think of grilled stonefruits in a really pleasant way.
Usually I’m all in when it comes to roasted teas, but there was something about this one that just felt kind of lopsided to me; I think maybe because it seemed to accentuate so much of the bitterness of the raw pu’erh? I would be so interested to hear from anyone else who gave this hyper peculiar tea a chance! How did you brew it and what did you taste? Did you like it?? I have two more minis left to try and make my mind up about this tea, and I think some peer guided coarse correction with my steeping could really help!
