Origin: Lin’an City in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.

Ingredients: made of the fresh organic tea leaves

Taste: complex layers of flavor, with an attractive taste that is brisk and slight bitter.

This Green Tea Powder comes from Hangzhou. It is made of the fresh organic tea leaves, milled into fine powder. The fresh tea leaves are in the shape of one bud with three to four leaves. Usually the water temperature for brewing this tea is at 60℃ to 80℃.

Oh, that sinking feeling when the spoon hits the bottom of the tin and your replacement order is somewhere in a bin in Chicago. It kind of makes you want to be extra appreciative of today’s tall breakfast glass.

I literally start everyday with this stuff. I can’t handle a real breakfast in the early morning but I have to have at least milk with my arthritis medicine. Milk gets boring. Green tea powder and milk make a nice canvas to get creative on. I’m on my way to the world market to look for xanthan gum to up the experience another notch. I just realized I have cacao nibs that I could be using as well. Endless morning fun.

Yeah, ohhhhhh noooooo! I had to choke down a chocolate, peanut butter, banana smoothie this morning without tea. Its a tough life. :) This is the first time I have tracked a package from China. I know it always takes a little over two weeks. Now I know why. Wish I could travel as much as my tea.

This came as a sample in my Christmas gift of Teavivre tea from my daughter, Superanna. I am finally able to try another tea that our late dear friend KS absolutely loved!

This is the lower grade of green tea powder from Teavivre and they recommend it for culinary use or for sweetened drinks. Honestly, I made it first like a traditional bowl of whisked matcha. The color was not a vibrant green when I opened the pouch but it had a really nice creamy aroma and I decided to go for it!

The tea powder settled faster than my ceremonial grade from Harney does, but I stirred it up once more and it was very drinkable and I enjoyed it with lunch. (miso soup) I have had far more bitter, less vibrant matcha!

Then today I organized my tea and set aside some that I want to finish ASAP and figured this open sample would be a fast and easy sipdown, so I made lattes for me and the Ashman. That creamy aroma had me wanting a matcha latte and I almost added vanilla to enhance the creaminess but ultimately decided it didn’t really need anything extra.

My Aerolatte was acting up so I put milk, sugar, and green tea powder in the Vitamix with maybe three ice cubes and whooshed. It was super good and made a great afternoon snack. Thanks to the Vitamix it was incredibly frothy.

Note: this and their higher grade that is referred to as matcha are both grown in China.

additional notes: oh. I really need to be working on this one. I had a craving of adding some matcha to some vanilla ice cream as “sprinkles” so I did. The first mouthful was pretty flavorful (mostly bitter) but then the subsequent mouthfuls seemed to mostly taste like vanilla ice cream. That was weird. Maybe the age affected the flavor… I also wanted to try adding matcha to a vanilla fast food milkshake. Maybe one day.

I’ve done that before when out of green tea ice cream. I wait until the ice cream is pretty soft, then stir the matcha in throughout the ice cream in the dish.

Oh I should try this! I have some extra cooking matcha, so over the last few weeks, I made matcha cookies, cheesecake, and overnight oats, and that still didn’t use it up!

I’ve been on a matcha kick lately and although I haven’t tried it with ice cream (except at a Japanese restaurant, I may order it as a dessert hehe). I do love matcha with oatmeal milk. It is one of my favorite ways to go through matcha when I know it’s coming up on expiration date.

I bought some of this during the Black Friday sale. At first I was gonna pass over it, but I think it was 30% off and I said “eh, why not”. I’m a big fan of matcha powder, as long as it’s not too overpowering. I especially love matcha iced. Great way to get that green tea flavor without having to wait for steeping, especially if you’re in the mood for something cold. You’ll see a fair amount of my reviews were from matchas prepared cold.

You’re supposed to use 1 tsp of powder for a 20 oz. cup but that is really too strong for me. So I used a 1/2 tsp, poured in some water, ice, and gave it a good shake. The result is a really good grassy green tea beverage. It’s definitely no matcha, but it’s honestly not bad. I could drink this on a regular basis as it’s quite affordable.

I just literally found a tiny brown beetle from my green tea powder tea. Second time I found a bug from my tea, hah! I once found snail cone. Not the most pleasant thing, but I don’t really mind.
