Sweet Toffee

This smells like coffee, has a whallop of rooibos, and tastes strongly of toffee and caramel – so basically, I need to avoid sending any of this to JustJames! :)

For anyone missing that trifecta however, I do strongly recommend this tea. There’s zero rooibos flavor, and just toffee caramel deliciousness. Huge thanks to Roswell Strange for reviewing it, just in time for me to order some along with my beloved Caramel Pu-erh.

I really enjoyed my first couple mugs of this: it was like super sweet, liquid caramel. Tonight however I’m only getting a little toffee/caramel and the rooibos is being especially woody and I have to admit maybe even just a touch medicinal.

Maybe I just brewed it up poorly? This is the first time I’ve made it in a timolino, so that could possibly have something to do with it? Perhaps? I don’t know – I just want this to be… Well, more than it is at the moment.

I know VariaTEA just her package from me which had some of this in it, so I hope she gets closer to the delicious first few cups I had instead of what I’m drinking now.

Recently I have been super sensitive to the taste of rooibos. Not in a way that I feel ill but rather I pick up on it and find it hard to get past the rooibos flavor. Unfortunately this blend has fallen victim to that sensitivity. I can taste the toffee and it is good but more than anything I am tasting the rooibos. At least this isn’t an unbearable rooibos like some others I have had but at the end of the day it is still rooibos. Nonetheless, I am glad I got to try this and I definitely understand why others would find this delicious – I think I am just biased. Thank you Roswell Strange for letting me try a sample :)

I really like caramel/toffee style rooibos blends, they’re possibly my favourite way to drink rooibos and a good staple to keep around for an evening when I’m craving something sweet. This is a really good one, and I finished off the last of it as a tea latte a couple of nights ago. I actually think I prefer this regular western steeped, without additives. That way, it’s delicious nutty toffee with a mild woodsiness from the rooibos. Drank as a latte, though, the base was a little overpowering of the gentle toffee and dessert flavours, which only really came out in the aftertaste. I think a touch of sweetener would have helped to coax them out more, but I didn’t have any maple syrup or brown sugar left so I drank it without. That being said, I did let it steep for a full 10 minutes, so it might be my fault that the rooibos was so prominent this time around. I still enjoyed it, but not necessarily quite as much as usual. I’ve added this back onto my wishlist, because when I eventually get through my old teas I might make a Tea Desire order, and if I do, this will be the first thing on my list.

VariTea sent this my way and it was off my wish list (at least I think it was V…if it was RS, apologies!) I had high hopes for this one but sadly all I’m getting is toffee flavoured wood. Bah. This is the sort of rooibos that I’m. It a fan of unless it’s spectacularly blended so a a not to be all, hey sil…go lick a tree for this taste :) oh well…good to know and be able to cross off my list. Hehe
