From Taiwan Sourcing

From “Pacific Bud” to “Pacific Petal” in the past two year, the Tie Guan Yin of Fanbaoshan has made it to the third year with us at Taiwan Sourcing, and this is a good omen for this remarkable tea, and so did the result turned out to be.

Fanbaoshan is the mountain that nurtured this tea, which has a lake named “Mysterious Lake” (神祕湖) nearby. You have to drive along the river valley to reach the bottom before begin a very steep climb, and the climb took us all the way to elevation at 1100 meters high. The crazy ride to reach the plantation could be seen in this video if you are interested to see how we got there.

Grand nature finally decided to give us a perfect weather to work this plantation on this third year. We basically receive bless from every direction while working with this very stubborn varietal. With such an assistance, this tea did not make things way too difficult to work with this year. Everybody at the tea factory was surprised to smell the strong “condensed milk” like aroma after its fermentation, and this is possibly the finest representation of this plantation so far. “Pacific Buddha” is finally created this year, and it is time to witness the pinnacle of Hong Xin Wai Wei Tao.

This is a perfectly tasty but not terribly exciting oolong. The flavor is that of pleasant, nondescript fresh fruit, with an underlying cinnamon sweetness characteristic of Taiwanese teas. The body is medium, falling short of a good Chinese TGY, and the astringency is on the heavier side for this style. I try not to let cost factor into my ratings, but this is a very pricey cha (I paid $33/25g), and the disconnect between that and the experience in the cup is disappointing. I would recommend this if you’re an oolong fan and can get it for a significant discount, but otherwise, there are plenty of more worthwhile purchases one could make from Taiwan Sourcing.
