From Petali Teas

Amoda Tea Monthly Box – August 2015

A tea inspired by the French Violet candies of Victorian times. Just like the candies, the tea flavours are rich like blackberry jam, enhanced with a light floral sweetness and warming, earth notes of white tea. This blend is packed with flavour, so we actually like it steeped on the lighter side. Find out how you like it – hot or iced.

Ingredients: Elderberries, white tea (Bai Mudan), violets, blackberry leaf and natural violet flavoring

Steep It

1.5 tsp per 8 oz cup

88°C / 190°F

3-4 minutes

Samurai Travelling Tea Box – Tea #12

I’ve had other violet blends from Petali before, so I was so excited to try this one since it’s a flavour that I think they typically do very well. I was sad when my mug steeped up though because the flavour was pretty flat and not really the same level of violet I’ve experienced in the past. A little sweet and fruity, and a little floral but just didn’t really land there fully.

This is a violet-flavoured white tea? The dry leaf smells morel like blackberry than violet. But what threw me off guard even more so is the base. It brews up a brown liquor, and both smells and tastes more like a roasted oolong than any variety of white tea I’ve ever had. I was expecting a delicate white with blackberry and violet notes and have ended up with a toasty tea with very subtle berry candy flavouring. I like it for what it is, but I’m glad I only got a sample from Amoda.

Another from VariaTEA – this one was almost a win for me. The fruit side of this tea is good, but i am not a fan of “violet” flavouring. The tea base works well with this combination though, so it’s a win that way – it’s just not a tea for me, so holding off rating it as well :)

Before steeping, this smells ultra sweet like candy. After steeping, there is a roasted quality. I’m really enjoying the taste of this one. I added just a little honey and it’s really bringing out that candy sweetness. I’m not sure what violets are supposed to taste like so I can’t say for sure that I’m tasting them, but they certainly are pretty while steeping. White teas are not my favorite, but this is definitely one of the better white teas I’ve had.
