From Octavia Tea

Oolong tea (also called Wu-Long) is prized for its anti-aging properties and body-slimming effects. Our Amber Dragon is a classic oolong with a deep, rich flavor with notes of dark chocolate, apricot and honey.

I give it 80/100. Nothing too special but a nice anytime tea.

Advent Backlog/Sipdown

I finally brewed this up today…I was feeling yancha after a stroll in the park. It was cold enough for my face to freeze a tad bit, so I wanted a warming tea. This was ok. Honestly, I love Wuyi/rock oolongs, but this was perhaps too light in flavor. There was a good bit of the roast playing the part in the flavor, but the tea was mild and wasn’t as elevated as some yanchas are…

Day 8 of the Tea Thoughts Winter Countdown box. So many rock teas in this box! It’s definitely forcing me to expand my palate for a terroir I’ve mostly avoided. This particular tea might be my favorite Wuyi I’ve ever had, but that’s quite simply because the mineral note is not so strong. It’s definitely still present, but the front of the sip is floral and sweet, with the mineral coming in mid-sip and not as intensely as in some others. Sort of like a mix between a bai hao and a rock oolong.

Adventageddon Day 8 – Tea 3/4

Gongfu!

Well this is a blast from the past! I don’t think I’ve tried anything from Octavia Tea in years and, looking at the rating I’ve given this tea in the past, it seems like I enjoyed this oolong a fair bit. I enjoyed it today too, but I think it’s a good example of how my tastes have refined within the last few years – especially as I’ve gotten to be just a bit of a yancha snob. I say that because, though I liked the bittersweet dark cocoa notes that accompanied the more mineral flavours and roast of this tea, I found it really hard to look past the slight coarseness of each infusion. The astringency that was rougher around the edges and less pleasant. The ever so slight metallic twang to the finish.

Now, mind you, I was also rushed to enjoy this session as I only had a half hour break in between meetings – so that surely factors in here too. And, ultimately, it was still a good tea.

I bought this tea with hopes of golden amber in cup. The taste of this tea is very dark and the ‘chocolate’ notes overthrow the apricot and amber taste. It may be a very rich tea, but it’s not as smooth as I would desire.

I was quite surprised by the apricot scent of the tea. Other reviews of this tea call it floral, but the apricot description is more accurate. However, this does not come through in the flavor. It has a very smooth, mellow, darkly sweet taste. This is were the allusion to chocolate comes from. Very nice!
