From Hōjicha Co.

Kyobancha is a Japanese roasted green tea with an enticing sweet aroma and a gentle taste.

Also known as iribancha and roasted bancha, Kyobancha is a Kyoto specialty sometimes simply referred to as bancha by locals. After being harvested from late winter to early spring, whole tea leaves and stems are steamed, dried without rolling, and roasted. This gives Kyobancha the appearance of fallen leaves, and makes its pleasant maple syrup scent and woody sweetness a delightful surprise.

Our Kyobancha is expertly crafted in small batches to achieve a perfectly even roast. The soft flavor and subtle smoky notes of Kyobancha leave you wanting for more, making this roasted tea a refreshing everyday drink.

Prepare Kyobancha by steeping 8 grams in 240 ml of 90°C (195°F) water for 2-3 minutes. Pour the light orange tea, breathe in the intoxicating aroma, and cherish each sip.

Ingredients: 100% Japanese green tea (Camellia sinensis)
Origin: Kyoto, Japan
Harvest: Month of March
Processing: Steamed, dried, and roasted
Flavor: Smoky, Sweet

Kyobancha is crafted and packaged fresh in Kyoto, ready to be delivered to your home. Our small batch roasted green tea contains no additives and is made from 100% Japanese green tea.

Couldn’t wait to steep up the Kyobancha from my most recent Hojicha Co. order!

I think this is the first kyobancha that I’ve tried, and it’s really interesting – sweet and slightly smoky, but with a bit of a greener “sap like” undertone and edge! It reminds me a little bit of Guayusa, but much nuttier. It steeped out faster than expected, maybe more leaf next time – but overall really nice!! I’m continually impressed not just with the quality of their teas but the incredibly fast shipping turn around!

I’m wondering lately if maybe Hojicha Co. sources their teas from Obubu? It would be interesting to compare and find out.

Hmm, I guess it’s always possible? I’m not super familiar with Obubu’s offerings – I don’t really dabble much in the way of Japanese teas. However, I know you definitely do so I’d be very curious to see your impressions!

If I didn’t already have 100 hojichas I would order some to find out, ha ha…
