Pumpkin Maté

Had a very autumnal flavor. Between the clove and the smoke, plus the hint of squash and pumpkin. This was my first maté, so I can’t comment on that aspect, but it did give me a good jolt of energy, which was desired.

So I got off midnight shifts yesterday morning and then I had to wake up for the day shift today. So my mind is still trying to adjust the sudden change. At least this shift will be pure overtime so I shall have a bit of extra money. That’s why I started the morning with this tea to help wake me up and get my brain started for the day. I’m not steeping it any less than 7 minutes from now on as that seems to fit this tea perfectly and give me the most flavour.

What a smokey flavor tea. I like the woodsy flavor in it. But I am no expert in mates.

But what I can tell you that this tea reminds me of falling leaves days’ spent walking through trails of heavenly forest which obscures the autumn sun.

If you are in love with that, you will love exploring the world of Wild by Cheryl Strayed. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. And as well as it may sound, I will also recommend reading South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami despite the fact that the novel has little connections to the woods and the falls that this tea’s taste clearly represents. I think it’s because of the plot of the novel which is at times, just as heavy layered as this tea is.

My husband ordered this tea to go from the store. I tried a bit of it. It tasted like a liquid slice of pumpkin bread with heavy nutmeg or clove spice. It was an interesting flavor but not one I would want a full cup of.

Smells bitter (maybe mate is just an acquired taste)?
Tastes like smokey eggnog, surprisingly not as bitter (as say, Jumpy Monkey which is a coffee mate).
Definitely wouldn’t be my top pick.

Second steep I tried adding a bunch of Hot Tropic (David’s Tea fruit infusion). Now it’s somewhat palateable but I shouldn’t have to mix teas to drink this!

I absolutely love this tea! I’m surprised by the negative reviews. I only purchased a small amount on sale due to the reviews but I wish I had gotten much more. Smells very grassy but to me it doesn’t come through in the flavour. Has the aroma of eggnog with the easy drinking of a black tea. Great with a little honey. Love it!

This tea is ok, I’m not in love though. It has a strong leafy/woodsy flavour and I did get a hint of smoke. I have eaten a lot of pumpkin seeds in my day, but always roasted with the shell on. The seeds in here are shelled and the flavour coming off them is not what I was expecting, it’s a bit like sunflower seeds. The last few sips tasted heavily of nutmeg. I don’t dislike it, I will drink it, but I wouldn’t buy it again.

I knew what I was getting into when I smelled this tea in the store. It is a VERY earthy tea that reminds me of a vegetable soup and I figured I’d try it to have something different in my cupboard. Overall, I enjoy the tea, but I’ve switched from using honey to light agave nectar to sweeten it. The agave cuts through the earthy-ness of the tea and makes it bearable. Mind you, I’m used to drinking teas like the birthday cake tea, peanut butter cup, etc. Jury’s still out on whether or not I’d recommend this tea. It may very well be an acquired taste.

An… interesting taste, and definitely too earthy for me. The smell was pretty good – I do love spices, but there was also something in this one that reminded me of eggnog, which is something I definitely do not enjoy, haha. I only had a 10g sample (and my mother took most of it), and honestly, this was plenty strong enough. I really watched the steep time on this one, and I’m glad, as this was plenty strong after five minutes. I’m glad I tried this (in my everlong quest to sample as much from DT as I can), but definitely not a repurchase.

Not bad but I’m glad I only got 20g. One sip and I really like it, the next sip and I’m not into it. Weird.
