From 52teas

Our Malted ChocoMate has been one of our most popular blends over the years, well, at least it WAS until this! Here’s roasted yerba mate blended with organic cacao nibs and organic flavors. It’s chocolate and cream cheese frosting and cake in a cup. I thought about adding some red food coloring, but I think you will agree that even if it isn’t red, it’s delicious.

I ordered 2 bags of this and only 1 came in the mail :( Anyway, I tried it this morning, I love to keep flavored mate on hand for waking up in the morning and I’m obsessed with dessert teas so something cake flavored with a jolt in the morning is my dream.

I’m impressed! it is definitely cakey, this is going to sound odd but you know how there’s a difference between the smell of cake baking and the smell once it’s done? Like while it’s baking it smells moist and once it’s done it’s drier? This tastes more like done cake, and I like that, it’s chocolately and cakey and I can even taste the cream cheese frosting which I did not expect. This may need to be stocked a little higher on my shelf so when it runs out I still have plenty.

Sil

That happened to me with another tea but Frank was good about getting another bag out to me when i emailed him about it right away.

Jackie O

phew, haha I checked on the website to make sure it wasn’t sold out first and I emailed him last night aka 1am when my boyfriend got home from work and brought the bag inside haha. I’m so in love with the new teas from him I’ve had lately!

Mmmm…mate! This is the second Mate I’ve ever had and it’s another hit for me. I love the roastiness in the taste, but it’s not something that I’d drink everyday – it would take away from the specialness of the experience. I’ve never had red velvet cake, so I can’t speak to the authenticity of the flavor, but it has a depth to it that does remind me of chocolate cake. It’s a lovely treat after a morning of sanding and mudding the walls of the powder room. Slowly but surely, the room is coming together :)

Lala

Red velvet cake is essentially chocolate cake dyed with beet root or red food colouring, with cream cheese icing.

TeaLady441

Thanks Lala – I was wondering if that’s all it was!

canadianadia

Thanks Lala, I had no idea. It sounds delicious!

momo

And usual it’s not chocolatey at all, the amount of cocoa powder is often really low like ONE teaspoon in some cases, and your usual chocolate cake is at least half a cup, if not more. I think for red velvet flavored things though that really doesn’t matter, but seriously I always regret picking out red velvet cake because the best part is the frosting, it’s the only thing with a flavor!

canadianadia

That sounds less yummy…I like to taste the chocolate in a chocolate cake, although I must say that frosting still sounds delicious!

Amayane

I worked at a bakery and our red velvet cake was a mixture of chocolate and vanilla with buttermilk used, so it’s not always just chocolate caked that’s been dyed.

canadianadia

see, now chocolate and vanilla sounds yummy again. I guess it depends on where you get it?

CHAroma

I’ve had red velvet cake for my entire life and never knew it had chocolate in it till I read this review! It definitely doesn’t taste like chocolate cake to me!

Disappointed. I brought this with me when I returned to work yesterday, as I got kind of used to my morning mate, but wanted to try another flavour before opening my second packet of Malted ChocoMate. Sadly, I can’t taste anything even vaguely reminiscent of cake, never mind specifically red velvet, here. I wanted this to be a cakey, cream cheesy, chocolatey wonder, but it’s just…not. I can taste chocolate, but it’s very mild and a bit lacking. Really speaking, this just tastes like slightly sweetened, roasted mate to me. It’s pleasant enough, but it’s not a patch on Malted ChocoMate either in terms of flavour, or in living up to its name. I’ll happily drink the rest of the packet, because it’s not bad, just a bit lacking. Meh.

Bleh, I had a feeling the mate would interfere with any potential Red Velvet flavours in this. Sorry it didn’t work out.

Tea #4 from Another TTB
Red velvet? Not so much? Chocolate mate? Yes ma’am! While it didn’t to me resemble anything of the sort of a red velvet cake (me being a baker, I was really let down) but however is still a yummy cup. Like Stephanie said in her tasting note, it does remind me a lot of chocolate malted mate:) if you are looking for a delicious red velvet cup of tea I would recommend DAVIDsTEA! :)

Tea #9 from Another Traveling Tea Box

This is one of those I wanted to like so much more. Red Velvet cake is one of my favorites, and I’ve enjoyed a good amount of the 52 Teas blends I’ve tried.

I just…I don’t know if roasted mate was the right base for this. It just adds an element of smokey toastiness that doesn’t belong in a chocolate cake.

That said, there’s definitely a cocoa element and even a vanilla-y sweet-tart cream cheese frosting element. The aftertaste manages to nail pastry well enough even. I just can’t get past the roasted note. It’s like someone took my cake and threw it on the grill.

backlog:

I liked this one a lot. I was glad that the chocolate notes are more pronounced than in a typical red velvet cake (I like red velvet alright, but, I want more chocolate. More chocolate = better … this is the rule and I have yet to find an exception to this rule.) This has a nice, chocolate-y tone (although more = better) and Frank did a great job at getting the cream cheese flavor (tangy and creamy), and I like the way the earthy tones of the Mate complement the flavors of red velvet.

A really tasty blend!

The first time I had this it was in my travel mug and tonight I’m having it with a splash of vanilla almond milk. I’m not getting much of the red velvet cake flavor but more of a chocolate roasted mate. The vanilla helps to make it a bit more cakey but still… all I taste is chocolate and vanilla :[ maybe I’ll have to play with it a little.

Thanks Jackie T for letting me try this one! I trying to catch up on some sample sipdowns as I have a few big mystery swaps coming my way. I haven’t found many mate teas that I like much, but I’m always hopeful. The 52teas flavored mates seem to have a banana flavor I don’t like much. This one too. Bummer, but glad to have tried it.

Thank you TastyBrew for this sample! I’m always up for trying 52Teas. Sadly, this one kind of sort of disappoints. I’m just getting a plain roasted yerba mate flavor (which is kind of like BBQ to me, so I’m not sure why that would work with cake anyway.) There are cocoa nibs here but not much chocolate flavor. (Steep was boiling for two minutes.) However, there was a creaminess that I appreciated. I just wish it was cakier!

I love roasted mate. I should really like this tea. Thanks JackieT for sending me a sample of it.
In the package it smells (if not red velvet) at least like chocolate cake. I’m not sure if I messed up steep times, but this lost all it’s scent during steeping. I was left with what to me tastes just like sweetened roasted mate. I didn’t get any chocolate at all. :((
