Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge Sunday, December 26th: National Candy Cane Day Tea #2

From AJRimmer, thanks very much!  I do believe this was the last of the Pudtea’s I had remaining to try.   It’s fairly straightforward – rooibos with peppermint.  The ingredients say candy cane pieces, which I hardly noticed.  And the rooibos is supposed to be vanillaish, but really I’m only tasting a minty rooibos… to the point where it seems like plain mint.  At least the rooibos is fairly smooth!  I felt very grateful to try most of Pudtea’s blends thanks to AJRimmer’s generosity before they seemingly disappeared.  Looking at my ratings for them again, I’d say I gave most of the teas ratings of 70 or early 80s.  The top favorites were BANOFFEE PIE, Eton Mess and Sticky Toffee Pudding in the 90s.  I disliked Summer Berry Pudding.   But the other teas were at least average.  Good to know!   I wish I could do small samples of entire tea shops more often!  In other news, I am now two weeks behind in reading tasting notes. oh no.

drank Yule Log by Pudtea

Mastress Alita’s January sipdown challenge Tea #4: A tea flavored like your favorite pie

Stay with me a minute – I know “yule log” is not a pie!  But I was thinking CHOCOLATE because my favorite pie is very specific.  I love most types of pie – it’s my favorite dessert!  BUT my favorite is chocolate cream pie from a local shop.  It can’t just be any chocolate cream pie but THIS chocolate cream pie with the right consistency of chocolate pudding and thick, solid whip cream, the right crust, the perfect ratios of all three.  I could have it every day and never get sick of it, despite it being so incredibly rich and decadent.  I wouldn’t even consider other chocolate cream pie to remotely reach the top of that list.  So this is a chocolate tea that fits the theme and it’s done now.

Thank you, AJRimmer!  I was trying to save this for the holidays, but wanted to try it before it was any older.  It’s a solid chocolate tea!  And really you can’t expect anything more from a tea called ‘Yule Log’.  As usual with Pudtea, the black tea base is very light.  If only the black tea was actually black tea, I would love these blends from Pudtea much more.  The chocolate is like cocoa.   I wouldn’t call it “rich” chocolate, but with odd ingredients like apple, dates, and raisins, it should really taste much less chocolatey than it does.  It’s tasty, but I’d probably just gravitate to a chocolate blend with cocoa shells.  But there are MUCH worse chocolate teas out there.

drank Caramel Brownie by Pudtea

Sipdown (1412)!

Like I figured I would in my last tasting note, I added some oat milk to this last mug when I finished off the tea. It was predictably not quite as good as having it as a latte but it was much better than the plain cup I had not too long ago which was thin and a bit oily. Very happy middle ground with more of that “brownie batter” flavour. Little caramel, though.

I don’t think I’d repurchase this because I don’t really like keeping teas around that need to be made in really specific ways to be enjoyable but I’m glad I figured out the trick to this tea and had some pretty nice cups!

Ok, so a latte is definitely the way to go with this blend!

Indulged in a small latte of this tea over my lunch break today and it honestly tasted like brownie batter with undertones of caramel – very accurate to the advertised flavour and the perfect balance of rich chocolate/caramel notes and creamy milk. It’s the best it’s ever tasted, easily! Sadly I don’t have enough of the sample left to recreate this latte for the future sipdown – but I know I’ll definitely be having it with milk to try and get at least a bit of that same flavour.

The mouthfeel of this cup was very, very thin and oily but the taste wasn’t so bad. Caramel is a stretch, but that sweet and syrupy note? Definitely present alongside a milk chocolate/cocoa powder taste that reminded me of a thin cup of instant hot chocolate. The kind we would drink in the heart of winter from thermoses while freezing in the cold. It’s fine.

Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge Monday, July 5th: National Apple Turnover Day Tea #1

Thanks AJRimmer!  A good choice for Apple day.  Interesting ingredients here.  The sample I received looks mostly like apple cubes and black tea.  The resulting brew hardly looks like black tea, which I guess I expect from PudTea by now.  The flavor is much more toffee than apple.  Sweetness, mostly.  I like it, but I am wishing more of these ingredients would be present in the flavor.  Dates! I can’t believe chicory is in the blend.  Tastes mostly like the sugary cubes.   I don’t mind this blend but I wish for MORE all around in this flavor.

Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge – May Tea #2: – A strawberry tea

Finishing this one up!  I think it was my second or third favorite from Pudtea.  Though now the blackberry leaves are tending to take over the flavor a bit.  I wonder if that happens when they get older.  I didn’t really notice that there is strawberries AND raspberries the first time around.  Now it’s just a hint of strawberry under the blackberry leaf.  THAT SECOND STEEP THOUGH. Perfection. The right mix of tart and sweet.  Couldn’t have been better. Raising the rating from 92.

Thanks very much, AJRimmer! This seems like a summery blend. The blend looks mostly rooibos but I’d rather that than mostly hibiscus. I like the flavor! Interestingly, there are only TWO blends called Eton Mess on Steepster. It does remind me a bit of Bird & Blend’s Eton Mess which is going neglected. sigh. OR EVEN their Jelly + Ice Cream blend actually. Maybe a mix of both blends…. which doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Very sweet, hint of cream or vanilla and some berries. A bit tart but not too tart. A nice lingering flavor. The second steep as well, very spot on flavor that I imagine an Eton Mess would taste like. Sweet berries and cream, tartness is gone in this steep. Lots of flavor here! I would DEFINITELY use this as a replacement for Jelly + Ice Cream, plus this blend doesn’t have that pesky coconut, so it has longer shelf life. A favorite from Pudtea so far! (I have a handful remaining to try.)

Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge Wednesday, May 26th: National Blueberry Cheesecake Day Tea #3

The newest blueberry tea for today!  Thanks very much, AJRimmer!  I am a little leery after that Berry Pudding disaster.  How could this possibly be cheesecake?  Again, the flavor is mostly rooibos.  But then a hint of berry, a hint of cream, but also mostly medicinal.  But again with the hibiscus.  You can’t just throw in hibiscus and call it a blueberry tea.   However, by the second steep, I’m mostly noticing strawberry!  So this seems more strawberry than blueberry!  Not a bad cup, but definitely definitely not what it should be.

drank Vanilla Sundae by Pudtea

Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge Saturday, May 22nd: National Vanilla Pudding Day Tea #1

Thanks very much, AJRimmer!  As soon as I saw the Vanilla challenge I knew I would have this one.  It’s not quite half black tea mixed with rooibos and so many of those little toffee cubes!  I’m so surprised the cup wasn’t sweeter than it is.  It really should be… so many sugar cubes.  The main flavor is rooibos.  Maybe at the top of the mug was the most vanilla flavored, but it was hardly flavored at all.  Maybe that is why the rooibos was used, in the hopes of taming the depth of the black tea to have more of the vanilla peak out? Hardly a SUNDAE tea!  A sundae certainly needs more than plain vanilla ice cream… Hardly even a plain vanilla ice cream tea here! On the second steep, those sugar cubes HAD to have disintegrated into the mug, so I’m not sure what was going on… tasted like a cup of plain rooibos.  It wasn’t bad though.

Thank you very much, AJRimmer!  However….Oh no, no no no.   This must be the most misleading tea name ever.  Summer Berry Pudding?  Yeah right.  It’s hibiscus.  And only hibiscus!  And earthiness!  How the heck could this be pudding?  Could only be disappointment.  I definitely thought I went very light on the parameters, so I don’t think it’s a matter of overbrewing and only finding hibiscus. I’m too annoyed to even write anything else for this one…

An Ode to Tea, E is for Eton Mess (gifted by AJRimmer)
Wednesday 4/21 — PudTea Eton Mess, made hot & plain 16 oz. Another rooibos tea bites the dust with a light hint of berry. Would like to try Eton Mess as the actual dessert. Thank you to AJRimmer for the share per my request to be added to the share package.

drank Black Forest Gateau by Pudtea
3739 tasting notes

I just found this tasting note written up in a draft, probably from months ago, so here it is now:

Thanks very much for another PudTea, AJRimmer!  This sounded promising.  It’s another very light black tea (it actually looks like a green tea) with a hint of berry (I wanted more more berry.)  The chocolate is decent enough.  If I had to blind taste test this, I would guess it was exactly that: a black forest cake, but the flavoring is so light.  Maybe it would be better with two teaspoons.  However, I loved the chocolate aspect of the second steep: the various chocolate elements were mingling for a very addictive chocolate effect.  I like it for that alone.  Wispy chocolate from chocolate chips in the bottom of the mug.

Thanks very much, AJRimmer!  I wanted a cozy  tea yesterday, on hopefully one of the last colder days of the year.  This fit the idea of COZY wonderfully.   Hints of cinnamon, raisin, maybe some other fruit and sweetness.   The other fruit I’m noticing must be the dates!  And just sweet enough from the fudge pieces.  Perfectly cozy indeed.  Sadly, I oversteeped the second steep as I was distracted, but it tasted fine.  Not much of the nuance of the first steep – this time mostly cinnamon.  I like this one!  I would buy it.  I am WAY BEHIND on reading tasting notes…

#tiffanys2021sipdown Tea #119 overall / Tea #35 for March

Sunday 3/28/21 — PudTea Vanilla Sundae. I’ve been lucky this year to have received, waiting to arrive, or in future will hopefully be receiving tea mail from various online tea friends… I’m actually going to do my Mastress Alita April sipdown challenge (the A-Z list of teas) just using teas I’ve gotten from these fun swaps! (or at least the best I can, still missing a few letters) — Anyway, this is a tea in my most recent mail [which was AJRimmer thank you!] I just had a long busy tiring weekend from work and wanted to make something hot/easy at home and lay down on the couch. I made this as a hot latte, but this just tasted like rooibos to be honest (I took a few small sips before adding milk), was not getting any of the black tea or fudge pieces.

Roswell Strange was right when she said I would not be a fan of this one. I’m not. I think I had it before because the package was open but if I did I did not write a note. It’s very rooibos forward with a lot of hibiscus. It’s not creamy. It doesn’t scream Berry to me. I’m passing the rest on.

This one turned out super thin. It mostly tastes appley with a tiny bit of spice. I absolutely love sticky toffee pudding, and this tea definitely didn’t come close in flavor. It tastes like a very weak cinnamon apple tea. Not bad, just boring. I added some milk toward the end of the cup, but the milk drowned out all other flavor. And this is my last tea from Pudtea! I hope they come back so I can buy more banofee pie, but I don’t need more of any of the others.

Thank you very much for sharing, AJRimmer!  I’m always looking for a great banana tea.  This is and might be in the running for the favorite from PudTea from many Steepsterers.  The banana is THERE in the flavor and not a fake candy type of banana.  Very good.  Also hints of vanilla and something that could even translate to pie crust or graham cracker. The black tea is light, but if the flavor is accurate, I don’t mind so much.  I was a bit worried that the apple would translate to the cup, but this doesn’t taste like apple at all. I didn’t really taste raisins or dates, but they might have the banana flavoring too. It’s surprising magic that these ingredients can even taste like this. The second steep is even better – liquefied banana and even more of the graham cracker.  It tastes just like a smoothie I make with graham crackers.  Even more amazing is the no stevia!  Look at what is possible, tea companies!

The majority of the leaf here was apple with just a little bit of black tea. The main flavor is apple. There may be a hint of toffee, or something a tiny bit desserty at least. The flavor is similar to bagged grocery store brands. I’d believe it if it were called an herbal apple tea. It doesn’t taste bad, but it tastes really boring and not at all special.

Aw man, this blend must be pretty heavy because there’s only enough for one more serving in here – I’ll definitely savor it! It smells great, just like cooked banana. The flavor is totally like caramelized banana too! I’m nervous to add milk because I don’t want to drown out the great banana flavor – but what if it only enhances it?! Yeah, adding milk transforms it into banana pudding. Very tasty. The resteep was strong and full of banana as well. This is the only Pudtea blend I’d really recommend, and if they come back, I’m totally buying a large amount of it. It might be the best banana tea I’ve tried.

This is basically just vanilla rooibos with black tea mixed in. There are cubes of fudge, but they didn’t seem to do anything. I’ve had much better vanilla rooibos teas, so I’m not too pleased with this one. It was pretty thin and lacking in flavor. It certainly didn’t live up to its name. Milk made it a little more exciting, but not much. I ate the melty fudge bits after my tea was finished steeping, so that was fun.

The fake berry plus the rooibos here are just not working for me. The berry is a bit too fake, and it just doesn’t taste good. It’s like medicine. I’m a huge rooibos fan, but this is the sort of rooibos blend even I can’t enjoy. I mean, I could probably finish my 1 oz bag if I wanted to, but I wouldn’t have a great time doing it.

Courtney

We love Eton Mess by B&B. :)

I have that issue with berry flavors on a rooibos base bringing out a medicinal/cough syrupy taste sometimes.
