drank Earl Grey by Metolius

I had some fun making this tea gongfu style in a gaiwan.

I brewed it 5 times. I drank earl grey before I drank any other tea…little kid stuff.

This is simply the best earl grey I’ve had. Definitely high quality ingredients that brewed up a high quality taste.

Share this one with your earl grey loving tea peeps.

I brewed this tea twice. I have been having some fun with tasting tisanes gongfucha style.

I used 8 grams in a gaiwan with excellent results. Steeped in 5+ times.
I used 5 grams in my easy steep tea maker. Steeped it twice for about 3 mins.

Both times I found myself wondering why I don’t drink more mate. It had the exact flavor I was looking for from the name, and left me feeling the potent power of mate but not as strong as I experienced in the past, which for me was great.

Definitely try it out.

drank Cardamom Rose Mate by Metolius

Another promising blend from TheLastDodo’s sale. Thank you! Much like the other blend from Metolius, so many nice ingredients but the flavor doesn’t seem to match up. It should have roses, cardamom, peppercorns, cinnamon and visibly, these ingredients ARE in the tin. I really just seem to taste sweet yerba mate maybe with a HINT of cinnamon. It’s a shame, but it tastes fine..if I pretend it’s a plain yerba mate. This is good to have around when I want a yerba mate anyway.

Additional notes: After Metolius commented on my last tasting note, I decided to give this one another steep with the suggested parameters. I thought using boiling water would make it astringent, as I’m not accustomed to using boiling water on yerba mate. Though there wasn’t that much of a difference in flavors and the ingredients but a little more astringency. I expected MORE astringency though. It’s a shock that there still isn’t much chocolate… or anything else. If this is an old blend though, I would expect the coconut to be much worse. Coconut tastes bad within months in some cases. Either way I steeped this, it didn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Steep #2 // just boiled // 4 min

:( too bad this one was a dud. I bought this one last September at a coffee shop. Who knows how long this was on the shelf!

Well, it’s drinkable anyway. :D Just not as good as the ingredients list promised.

Thank you so much for the sale, TheLastDodo! This blend sounded MAGICAL. I will simply copy and paste the list of ingredients, so you can see what I mean: Toasted coconut, chocolate, marshmallow root, cayenne, ginger, licorice, cloves, cinnamon, yerba mate.

All of those sounded like a fantastic idea. The dry blend itself looks like a lot of coconut and marshmallow root unless the yerba mate is really finely ground. Not as many spices as I’d expect but there are pieces of chocolate. Sadly, even with two teaspoons (as suggested), the blend seems to taste mostly of a sour yerba mate. Not really any notes of anything else! How is that possible? Such a shame! I tried to shake up the blend before putting some into a teabag too. The ingredients for this one sounded like it could be a favorite blend for me (cayenne! Chocolate!), but ended up disappointing.

I hate when this happens! >:( I also hate when the aroma is amazing but the taste is barely even detectable.

TheLastDodo

I know! All the chocolate chips melted before I got it home :( I tried it with hot cocoa mix and cinnamon, to much more success. Definitely worth trying out!

But the chocolate is still THERE, it just doesn’t taste like it for some reason.

Metolius Tea

Hi, I designed this tea and i’d love to add my perspective. Try steeping it with full boiled water for 4-5 minutes. If the steep is short and the water is cool, you are not going to unlock the flavors. This tea has barks and roots in it that keep their flavors bound up tighter than flowers or added flavorings. Also, I changed the recipe years ago. It hasn’t had marshmallow root in it for a long time. Looks like you might have a stale, old batch. I hope you try it again with fresh leaves and freshly boiled water. Thank you for trying and reviewing my tea. I appreciate it.

A sweet, spiced, floral mate. The rose is a bit more muted than the cardamom, but they play nice and keep the tannic mate from choking the blend.

Perhaps I didn’t steep it long enough, but the combination in flavors was off. I personally avoid chocolate in tea like a plague. I have been putting off this tea because of that. Maybe next time I will try to steep it longer and add gasp milk.
