Steep Information:
Amount: 1 flower – 6.7g
Water: ~185°F 16 ounces (oopse, it was supposed to be a 6 ounce cup!)
Tool: Adagio IngenuiTEA 16 oz
Steep Time: a little over 5 minutes
Served: Hot

Tasting Notes:
Dry Leaf Smell: floral
Steeped Tea Smell: floral, garden green
Flavor: sweet, floral, vegetal, slightly astringent, slightly bitter
Body: Light
Aftertaste: sweet, slightly astringent, slightly bitter
Liquor: pale translucent yellow-green

A free sample from Chicago Tea Garden, I am more than excited to get my paws on a tea before it even gets listed on the website!

And a pretty decorative one at that.

Well I wasn’t paying attention obviously! I used too much water, and wasn’t particularly swift about retrieving the tea when the timer went off.

Luckily the tea took the abuse and rolled with it, it was nice and delicate and pretty good for an afternoon cup, definitely not bold enough to be a morning cup of tea, or sweet enough to be dessert.

Next time I want to sweeten it.

Resteep: It was supposed to be 8 ounces, 5 minutes. I forgot about the flower! Not sure how long it was in. I took a few sips and it was pretty much a slightly weaker /

more delicate version of the first steep. I stirred in a honey spoon, and the honey spoon totally hid the flavor of the tea, boo! I should have used sugar. So it was a honey water with floral notes and a vegetal after taste.

Resteep: Again, it was supposed to be 8 ounces, 5 minutes. Again I forgot about the poor flower. So after an indeterminate amount of time I got a cup of floral, vegetal bitter tea.

The first steep was enjoyable, and I messed up the second two steeps. This flower does have staying power, and yes It does remind me of a pretty peony when viewed from above after steeping.

I am playing a game with the samples, based on Rabs Geek Pride Day Giveaway, this was #4

It’s a very nice coffee flavored, caffeine free drink, I’m really enjoying this!

I won this in JonTea’s first mini contest!
What is the wildest name of tea you’ve ever heard of?
My Answer: Dragon Balls

Post-Steep Additives: 1 packet sugar
brings out the maple more

It’s yummy and sweet and soothing. I loved the little maple leaf candies. I’m not bowled over by it though.

Couldn’t agree more with the sweet soothing smell and taste of maple! I seemed to be more fond of it than you were but isn’t the smell so amazing. Like its so accurate to maple syrup :D

AmazonV

Yes, warm maple syrup, makes me want pancakes

Rabs

Dragon balls! I still randomly giggle about that one :) I also have to say that today’s Select cracks me up too since Harney & Sons went with the more “eloquent” globes instead of balls. And then of course I think of Dragon Balls again. ::giggle::

Jillian

Oh gad, you wouldn’t believe the ‘ball’ jokes that were bandied around when Adagio’s Black Dragon Pearl tea first came out. ;D

It resteeped well, in fact I would have believed it was a less full bodied teas’ first steep.

I won these teas in a contest that was run by Dan on Steepster that was great fun, and got me tea prizes! Dan will be running the contest monthly, so keep an eye out!

I find the labels on the tea samples to be perfect, they include the company name, tea name, tea type, and steeping directions. I have been informed that the samples that you buy on the web site, or any teas purchased on the site, will come in food safe, plastic lined, kraft bags which keep light out and keep the tea fresh for about 4-5 months. Tea is best stored in tins which are not clear and air tight, since light activates the steeping process and moisture as well. The sample bags I received were about 2-3 cups each, where purchased samples are larger.

Post-Steep Additives: 1 packet white sugar
Now I get an aftertaste of dried pineapple snacks

I am not in love with this cup, sadly I now expect teas to dance and sing before I wow them, but I am enjoying it, and can hear the beach lapping in the back of my mind with a nice cool breeze.

I gave the rest to a co-worker who also enjoys tea to try – I’m sharing the bounty! There was enough for another cup or two

What I really like about this review is that you’ve taken the responsibility of winning seriously! You are setting a good example for all of us. Just let me say thanks from your Steepster community.

TeaEqualsBliss

It WAS great fun! And you kicked arse, AmazonV!

gmathis

Sounds like it’d be yummy on ice.

AmazonV

@TeaParT thanks – I figured Dan was nice enough to have the contest and I won the teas I might as well try and let everyone know all about them before he runs the next contest do they have a better chance of picking out teas for their winnings :)

I can’t wait for the next contest! (even w/out free tea it was fun)

AmazonV

@TeaEqualsBliss I hope your internet connection behaves next time! thanks :) i think we were all twitchy and afraid to blink ;)

AmazonV

@gmathis ooo good point cold brew would probably work very well, but i am sharing the tea love and it’s already gone on my co-worker :( (plus i have no refrigerator or ice at work)

Finishing up this sample from Lori

Steep Information:
Amount: 3 tsp
Water: 212° 750ml filtered
Tool: Breville One-Touch Tea Maker BTM800XL (Black, Medium)
Steep Time: 2 minutes
Served: Hot

Tasting Notes:
Dry Leaf Smell: sweet and fruity, but not specifically mango
Steeped Tea Smell: sweet, mango + other fruits + black tea
Flavor: black tea, dried mango snacks, astringent, a touch bitter
Body: Medium
Aftertaste: sweet fruity, astringent, a touch bitter
Liquor: dark orange brown

Again, as the name implies, tastes like those dried mango fruit snacks. It’s not the fresh juicy mango taste, but it is truly mango. If we had not tried Mango Black from thepuriTea.com this would be the new favorite. Theirs wins out by virtue of being true fresh mango.

2 minutes versus 3 did not cut down on the bitterness or astringency much.

Post-Steep Additives: 1/2 tsp German rock sugar
More sweetened dried mango, yum yum!

Preparation
Boiling 2 min, 0 sec
AmazonV

iced 1 cup and tried, bleh not so yummy iced and not sweetened

I am The Devotea USA. I love caffeine! I prefer tea to coffee. I prefer my flavors to be in your face, not subtle. I plan to use this blog to keep track of the teas I have tried.

I get my daily dose of caffeine from Starbucks (Grande soy no water chai latte).
