From Zen Tea

This long lush twisted leaves make very deep and mellow with a natural cinnamonic fragrance and a rich, malty flavour. This enchanting fragrance and flavour is from mountainous Nantou county of Taiwan. Ruby Black is produced from a hybrid of native Myanmar and imported Assam trees planted by Japanese growers in the 1920’s. The TTES (Taiwan Tea Experimental Station) spent over 50 years to accomplish the breeding program and release this cultivar in 2003. Ruby black tea is also alled “TTES no.18”.
Black tea experts praise “Ruby” for its unique "Taiwan fragrance". It belongs to an extremely special tea cultivar even in the multitudinous world well-known black teas. Its special fragrance let the taste person being unable to forget its aroma and flavor for a very long time.

I had this yesterday as a change of pace from all the sheng. :) It’s a typical Taiwanese black: long, twisted, black leaves. Sweet, malty, biscuity flavour. Not the best one I’ve ever had, but quite good. I was distracted by work and not paying a ton of attention – will have to do another review some day when I’m more focused on my tea.

Another sample from Evol Ving Ness

This is a pretty tasty tea.. there’s some honey notes here, though not as strong as my delicious TTC teas. It’s also a little malty and there’s a taste there that i can’t quite place, adding a little strength to the tea. This is a nice, none USD$ alternative for a ttc sort of tea.

The flavor is a great example of this types of tea: honey, hints of malt, and a lot like those chocolates with the roman nougat filling. That is exactly why I love this type of tea. It’s probably only noticeable if you’re a fan of those types of candies. Maybe to others it’s a hint of cherry (or maybe just something fruity) and nuttiness. I could wish for a little more of the roman nougat flavor, but some of these types of teas don’t have that at all, so I’m glad it’s there. The flavor is very smooth and I think perfectly steeped this way. The cup looks like it’s full of maple syrup and just as smooth!

I love Taiwan Ruby teas but I haven’t tried Zen’s. Will rectify soon.

Sipdown. Cinnamon malt. Always pleased with the quality of this tea. Guess I’ll just need to get it from somewhere else as Zen tea is teaware only right now.

I love these types of light black teas. I knew I had to try the new one from Zen! The leaves are like tiny dark tree branches. The tea leaves are long and unbroken, a pretty black. I used 1 tbls of leaf.
This is one delicious brew. It is malty and sweet with a fairly smooth and thick mouthfeel. It is a little spicy, cinnamon. There are some fruity notes which I would most associate with plum.
I resteeped for 3 minutes, but didn’t get a chance to really pay attention to the flavours.

I was desperate getting nice quality white tea cup. White because it shows the true color of the tea.
its not that easy. The cup had to be around 80-90ml and not too thin. While i like thin cups they are not practical for me. its too hot to hold them. and im always afraid to break them.
So Zen Tea Life has pretty extensive Korean ceramic pieces which i happen to love. And i found my perfect cup there.

They got new Taiwanese teas . I had to add a sample of this tea.
Its delicious. made gongfu 5g 100ml 195F
Leaves are gorgeous, long full, not broken. had many steeps. it has usual Taiwanese black tea profile of fruity longan sweetness and raw nuts.

Zen Tea never disappoints me with quality of teas, teaware, pricing and careful packing. And i got it in two business days from Canada.

YAY!!! The cup (which is exactly the type of thing I need…need? maybe more ‘want’, but it feels like a ‘need’! haha), sounds so perfect! I haven’t looked at their teaware before, but now I have to check it out.
Gorgeous pictures, too. :D

How does this Taiwanese tea compare to similar offerings from Butiki and TTC?

boychik DeliriumsFrogs, i will send you PM.

looseTman, the tea is very good. $20 for 100g . and you can get a sample, their samples are 20g. Pretty generous. This is not Taiwanese Assam,so I cannot compare it Butiki’s PTA, but Taiwan Ruby #18. i’ve sampled some TTC black teas. Some I liked , some were ok, or so so. its not side by side tasting but I assure you it is very good tea.

Red #18s are interesting teas. Eco-cha has a nice one, lots for rich sweet sundried tomato and minty notes. They set me up with ’12 and ’13 from the same farmer, and it was really fascinating to taste the two side by side. Clearly the same tea, but so different at the same time. Like the same girl dressed for an upscale restaurant one night and beach bonfire picnic the next.

sansnipple

lol, never seen a tea seed in a black tea before, only in puerh bricks
