REGION: AMAKUSA, KUMAMOTO

An island located in the south of Kumamoto Prefecture, Amakusa enjoys a lush, well-preserved natural environment, but the weather conditions, with the salty winds, are not ideal for tea growing. Yet, Mr. Ihara has been able to adapt to his environment to produce kama-iri chas of the very first class, rising to the top every year in the competitions.

Among the various areas in Kyôto Prefecture where Uji tea is grown, Wazuka is one of the most famous for senchas. At 600 metres (almost 2000 feet) in altitude, the Tsuchiya family, which has won many awards in national competitions, grows and finishes very high quality teas, using the least possible fertilizer and pesticides.

THES DU JAPON’S TASTING NOTES

This kama-iri cha was entered in the 2015 national competition. Its leaves are a beautiful shiny deep green, finely rolled, thick, different from traditional kama-iri chas. Their fragrance is sweet, with notes of cacao. Infusing the leaves produces a warm scent, with aromas of sweet potato and roasted chestnuts.
In the mouth, there are peaty flavours at first, very aromatic, which express themselves before giving way to sweetness, umami, and then finally the savor of fresh vegetables, avocado, long in the mouth, which share the aftertaste with mellowness.
While competition kama-iri chas can sometimes be perplexing, this Japanese green tea has strength and character, and true characteristic kama-iri cha flavours, allied with the great purity of competition teas.

The weather is getting warmer and the sun is shining, so i’ve been craving something a bit more “green”, and this tea fit the bill quite nicely. The leaves are short and thick with a heavy scent of umami that is quite lovely. I grabbed my kyusu and scooped some inside. The brew is brilliantly clear and light jade with a nice warming umami taste with a green grassy base. The brew is not overly complex, but it is enjoyable to drink, and it will do perfectly today.

Thank heavens Andrew sent me a green tea. I’ve had so much oolongs, blacks, and pu-erhs that I’ve started to get a bit overwhelmed. That is especially true this morning. That Wu Yi varietal was starting to give me a massive headache. The astringency started to follow really badly too.

This green goodness saved my palette. Super fresh, green, and yummy. It distinctly tastes like spinach, asparagus, umami, avocado, and sea weed in a really nice way. Plus I’m personally getting a bit of a creamy, almost oily mouth feel. My stomach is starting to settle. That could just be psychological-veggies can have the tendency to do that to me. It’s so GREEN. I especially like the later steeps. All of them were incredibly short, the longest being 30 sec toward the end. 5-10 sec was the average.
