From Yunnan Sourcing

This is a wonderfully complex Liu Bao from Wuzhou area of Guangxi. It was harvested and processed in 2019 from old bushes.

This Liu Bao is very cleanly stored with little to no mustiness. The taste is thick, sweet with earth and wood flavors and a long lasting hui gan. The leaves that come in the basket are not a specific leaf grade but rather reflects the 2 leaf to 1 bud picking style used to harvest the tea. After wet piling the tea was stored for 3 years before being packed into baskets and boxed.

I’m really loving the deep camphorous pine and cassia notes that so heavily coat the palate with each sip! It’s cooling, warming and medicinal all wrapped together. It’s a bit like licking resinous pine sap, in truly the best of ways, and it feels so aptly complimentary for the cool, crisp autumn air as I look out at the smattering of orange and red leaves starting to overtake the trees from the view of my desk. If you had told me eight years ago that some of my favourite teas would be the ones that taste like making out with a tree, I would have called you crazy…

But here we are.

I don’t have much experience with young liu bao. This one strikes me as above average production with very good longevity and complexity, but time is going to be the judge of that ultimately.

At the moment, the dry leaves have a fairly strong fermentation aroma, which, after the rinse, turns into an earthy, woody and slightly sweet mix with a nice lichen note.

The taste is more savoury and medicinal than other liu bao I’ve had. It does have the characteristic earthy and nutty notes, as well as the woody sweetness to a lesser extent, but they don’t dominate the experience. On top, there is also an interesting floral kind of bitterness a bit in the way of endive and mint. Hints of dry wood smoke and honey can be also found underneath.

The liquor has a very smooth, creamy texture that has a palpable thickness to it and induces a faint numbing sensation. Aftertaste is dominated by woody sweetness that really comes to the fore over time.
