2014 Menghai 7582 Recipe Raw Pu-erh tea cake * 357 grams
Classic 1975 recipe with an average of grade 8 leaves. This is similar to 8582 but has it’s own unique character.
Smokey "BBQ" like aroma and taste. Crisp and smooth liquor with a solid "hui gan" and sweet aftertaste. Complex mouthfeel with hints of mushroom and a solid cha qi. Aged mao cha used give this a golden yellow tea soup and an aged taste.

(Checking in on how my collection is developing)

Wet Leaves: Smoke. Like Scott says on YS, it’s a distinctly “BBQ” kind of smoke, like savory foods cooking on a grill. Heavy, dense aroma. Smells oily, like resin or lacquer. Hard to pick out aromas. Maybe some fruitiness or vegetal?

Early Steeps: Smoke. Already feeling a little thick. Fairly sweet.

Middle Steeps: Robust. Thick, sweet, and whole lot of bitterness. Smoke has calmed down, and now a fresh fruitiness is peeking through.

Tail End: Smoke has finally balanced, some herbal flavors present, and penetrating sheng bitterness lingers a long time after wards.

Verdict: Good, aggressive young tea, but I don’t enjoy this as much as when I was a total newbie. But great candidate for storage though, obviously. Will probably only drink it in a specific mood.

Drinking this tea after well over a year or more of having tasted it before. Much less smokey … as a matter of fact, hardly at all. Nice, smooth, not bitter, herby, soothing mouthfeel – very pleasant and very much changed from it’s former campfire-like smokey profile.

I remember the smoke aroma. Haven’t tried mine as of yet.

the cake is very loose around the outer parameter, so instead of digging in from the center, I just gently pulled off leaves from the rim of the cake. Drank it again tonight, little to no smoke
