From Yunnan Sourcing

This is a 2007 production compressed in December 2007 (Batch 701). This blend is composed of semi-aged 2 and 3 year Menghai are “mao cha” (loose sun-dried Pu-erh). This cake is the second release of the “Silver Dayi” blend. The first and last time Menghai released the “Silver Dayi” cake was in 2003. Since that time it has appreciated in value faster than any other Menghai Factory tea cake. The use of semi-aged “mao cha” gives the tea a mellow and textured flavor. This is sure to be one of the best Menghai cakes of recent years!

YUGE camphor smell right away. Nice taste on the rinse actually even though I put one solid chunk into the gaiwan. Creamy taste, slightly fruity. Color of the soup is teetering on orange but is still pretty yellow. Smell is evolving to woodsier but the camphor is there still. Flavor is very mild but my chunk hasn’t finished opening yet.

3-5th steeps are gaining astringency but still nice. Flavor is starting to get where I want it, I should’ve broken up the leaf a little bit but oh well. A little chalk and earth, a little citrus, a little eggplant. 6th+ are all pretty similar, nice astringency level and decent flavors. Not intensely exciting and absolutely not worth the $50-100 that a cake is going for to me. Good though.

Smokey. That’s the only flavor I could taste. While it wasn’t overpowering, and it was a fairly smooth smokey flavor, it was the exclusive flavor of this tea.

It wasn’t bad, but my wife and I didn’t find it tasty. (We don’t like lapsang souchong either)

Smokey though 4 steeps. Smoke became less pronounced, but still the only taste.

Flavors: Smoke

If you decide to swap some of this let me know.

Yea, I’d be interested in swapping for a non-smokey aged raw

Gaiwan used *
I was fortunate to receive a Gaiwan for Christmas; a brewing device I have been after for for some time, after hearing good things about them. The cafetiere and tea strainer will now take a rest while I review the rest of my Yunnan Sourcing order. I’m slowly getting used to the Gaiwan and finding it very handy for brewing small amounts of leaf, something which is useful when the tea is expensive!

Summary: Yes this tea has the concentrated herbyness I associate with Menghai, but it’s a bit on the mild side. I much preferred the Menghai Dayi 2007 “V4” from Berylleb on ebay.

4g used. I could only find 24gs of my 25g order…

Dry leaf: Complex: concentrated herbyness and peppery smoke.
Wet leaf: Complex: Concentrated herbyness, bright fruits, peppery smokiness and dark plums.

5s – Mild greenness and smoky.
15s – Still a bit mild. Smoky, mild herbyness; The flavour is in the background and not very strong.
20s – Subdued concentrated herbyness and smoke. Lingering peppery smoke.
25s – Stronger. More pronounced concentrated herbyness and peppery smoke.

Flavors: Herbs, Pepper, Plum, Smoke
