Autumn harvest tea leaves from 200-300 year old tea trees growing in Jiu Tai Po village in Jinggu county of Simao. Jiu Tai Po or “9 Mesa Village” is a small village with about 1200 inhabitants. Many are involved in tea production. The surrounding hills are covered forest and tea growing, often among larger trees. The elevation is an ideal 1500 meters.
Our Jiu Tai Po village tea cake is a sweet, thick and pungent tea. It’s got a grain-like taste, bitterness and floral notes much like a good IPA! The cha qi is noticeable but not overpowering. Can be infused 10+ times without losing power.
Stone-pressed in the traditional manner.

Yunnan SourcingI like this even more than the Spring 2023 Heaven’s Door raw pu-erh I tried recently, and this tea is at a more affordable price point, too. A similar flavor profile between the two, but this autumn tea has more perfumy florals (violet) to go along with the cotton candy sweetness, which is also somewhat nectar-like. This tea is a bit more complex with more grainy flavors and apricots, too, and some deeper more leathery notes to it. A really wonderful tea!
Some bitterness is present as well, and it does indeed remind me of a good IPA, per Scott’s description.
