The Big Tree Red is a very unique black tea, made from old arbor Puer material. The name red comes from the Chinese name for black tea, hongcha, which literally translates as “red tea”. The big tree is because of the material used, a mix of summer and fall old tree big leaf varietal from near Lincang area. The trees used are roughly 100 – 200 years old.

We very strongly recommend brewing this tea gong fu style, with approximately one gram of leaf per twenty milliliters of water. A rinse is not necessary and the tea should be prepared with boiling water. If brewed with fast infusions, the tea should last between fifteen and twenty steeps, which is uncommon endurance for a black tea.

We strongly recommend that Puer lovers experience this strong and enduring black tea.

This is a fantastic tea. I wanted a big cup of this so I brewed it in a 250ml glass teapot, but brewed it more gongfu style than western. I brewed 8.2g in 250ml of water. This tea is among the best black teas I have ever had. It is slightly malty but not to strong. It is somewhat chocolaty. It is just really good. The flavor of it is amazing. It is not cheap. I figure this brewing session cost me roughly $6 as the tea was $35 for 50g. Definitely not a tea I want to brew in my standard Western style for black teas in a 16oz Teapot for 3 minutes. I would buy this again if they still have it when I run out. It’s just too expensive to stock up on when I still have most of a tin of it.

I brewed this five times in a 250ml glass teapot with 8.2g leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 20 sec, 30 sec, 40 sec, 1 min, and 1.5 min. I think I could get a lot more out of this and may yet go back for a few more steeps.

terri sent this one my way – i haven’t had any opportunity to try white2tea so i was happy to see this. I treated this like i do most puerh and brewed it gonfu style this morning since that’s what’s recommended on the website. I’m still working on it, though i can say that this is a lighter tea but not without flavour. i’m still waking up so i’ll try to write more later. but this is a win.

DROOL this tea was fantastic! Interestingly, this is from old arbor tree fermented puer made into black tea. The color is a dark orange and reminds me of a gold tipped yunnan black in flavor (creamy, malty) but with a berry fruityness to it. The steeped leaves smelled like raspberries to me. This tea also is a beast of a resteeper – finishing off with buttery flavor. Verry cool. Cry, I need more of this tea and it’s $35 full size and I just did a group order! cry.

For some reason I found this tea flavorless and flat after the second steep. I got colored water for several steps after that but it just tasted like water.

Personal rant, not meant to offend anyone: I really wish that the owners of tea companies would put their teas in the database. I get tired of having to enter the info on every new tea I sample, and sometimes lately I don’t bother to write a review, because I’m busy, I’m tired, & I don’t really feel like doing it. I’d rather just enjoy the tea.

And I did enjoy this one, another sample from the tea club. When I opened the envelope, the aroma drew me in, heady & rich, almost like a perfume (but not grotesque, like perfumes are to me). Multiple steepings carried me through the morning & had a cool soothing effect, like the feeling of clay, even though the tea was actually hot, of course. Kind of sweet, reminiscent of Mandala’s Black Beauty (but different), never bitter. It’s lovely..
