From Verdant Tea

“An inspired blend of Phoenix Mountain oolong and black with rich chocolatey spice accented by the sweet florals of whole vanilla bean and marigold. . . .”

After countless requests, we took up the mission of formulating the best chocolate chai in the world. Instead of a traditional black tea base, we opted for a mix of two Mi Lan, or Honey Orchid varietal teas from the Phoenix Mountains. The Mi Lan Oolong gives a fruity and sweet juiciness to the whole mixture, while the Mi Lan Black provides a rich caramel thickness and satisfying malty thickness. Combined, their flavor profiles already suggest chocolate, so it was easy to pick out a light roasted organic cacao nib, and organic whole vanilla bean for blending.

The opening flavor in this chai is that of a satisfying, freshly frothed Mexican hot chocolate. The flavor of sweet ginger and buttery saffron follow, with cardamom for balance. Next, the base tea itself really shines in contrast with juicy fruity bursting texture, like eating the best red grapes ever. The sweetness does not fade, instead, it is brought out by the floral whole vanilla bean that we mix in generously.

This chai is one of our favorite projects so far, and blends great with milk or almond milk, and honey or agave. Iced, this one performs just as spectacularly, with more vanilla floral notes coming through.

Oh wow, this is not your usual chai and I am really impressed.

I usually like my chai brewed up really strong, with milk and sugar, and so I had some hesitations around this one, as many tasting notes have said it tastes weak. While this is not at all bold and brisk, like some Assam based chais or ones with a CTC base, nothing about this tastes weak to me.

The dry leaf smells strongly of cardamom and ginger, with a whiff of vanilla. Steeped the chocolate notes come out on the nose, as well as a butteriness and sweetness.

On the palate, the base teas are forefront and not overpowered by the spices. Malt, floral and fruity. The chocolate, ginger and cardamom combine beautifully, for a rich, spicy but almost cooling flavour profile. The vanilla is there and adds a nice creaminess. The finish is ginger and cardamom.

I am so impressed with how complex and well balanced this is. I’m glad I got a whole, unopened bag from the stash sale, because I think that this will be a regular cup for me.

i wonder if the formulation was changed. I hated this one previously

I dunno. I picked this up from a stash sale so it might be quite old. I think a lot of teas from that sale were. I know that they don’t offer it anymore at Verdant.

I quite enjoyed this one, but yeah, I believe it hasn’t been offered in quite a while. The fact that I think I actually don’t have any left should give you an indication of that! (Considering I have bits of like, everything left.)

Also, Sil – could have been different harvests? I feel like it was around long enough for that to have been a factor.

Sil

could be.

This is so boss with a sweet, glazed peach pastry… This is my happy moment of the day.

As is true for many chai tea lovers, I am always trying to find that perfect blend. After reading the reviews of this one on this site, I had to try it. The tea itself is visually beautiful and smells like it has plenty of cardamom and ginger to make me happy, but I’m a little worried about the short steeping time that is suggested because I love my chai spices to be able to stand up to some milk & honey.

After 2 minutes of steeping, the tea smells mostly floral and is a light gold in color. Mixed with some honey and milk, the flavor I get is mostly oolong with a slight aftertaste of ginger and cardamom. It’s lovely, but not as bold as I usually like my chai. I think I’ll try cold brewing some tonight to see if that makes it a little stronger.
