From Upton Tea Imports

A blend of Tippy GFBOP Assam teas for strength, plus a distinctive, bright Ceylon tea for briskness. This Orthodox Process Irish Breakfast style tea is very flavorful. Reformulated with bolder and more uniform teas to produce a cleaner cup.

Finished my sample yesterday. I ended up drinking it just to get rid of it rather than because I liked it. It’s not bad, it’s certainly drinkable, but it’s not to my tastes either. I’ve got myself a lovely new tin of the CTC Irish Breakfast and I will be sticking with that! mmm.

One of my favorite breakfast teas. It’s a robust blend of Assam and Ceylon. I have been alternating it with Upton CTC Irish Breakfast and I prefer the latter, being pure Assam. That said, it makes an excellent cup.

Flavorful enough to be interesting after a good dose of cream and sugar. My favorite breakfast blend so far.

Really enjoying this. I made it the other day at work and felt it was meh, but today I actually took the temperature of the water coming out of our ‘boiling’ water spigot and discovered it’s only getting up to 160 degrees. So I stuck my mug in the microwave to get to around 212, which took much longer than I would have thought. I think I will get a cheap kettle for work.

Edit: I made this in the For Life tea infuser that came in my Whispering Pines set and lots of bits got into the actual tea. Should I not make a non-leafy tea like this in an infuser? What do people use for making this kind of tea?

I would use two things: 1. Gaiwan (if you have one) for home, but be sure to use it over a sink or a tea tray. 2. An adagio tea maker. They’re $18 on Amazon, which is a nice price. Both will allow for the leaves to expand during the steep time, and you’ll get more flavor that way.

Correction: Due to the inability to read correctly, the Gaiwan wouldn’t work for a smaller leaf; however, the tea maker is just fine.

Hi Rufus, is this the tea maker you’re talking about? It looks awesome.

I was also thinking a fine mesh infuser might work better. That’s what I have at home — I have the Bodum Tea for One set. At work I just have the For Life. Seems like the Bodum one would be better for the smaller leaf tea.

Yes, that’s the one. It works well with smaller and larger tea leaves. I find that it helps bring out the flavor more. I use it for my Broken Assam tea by New Mexico Tea Company or with any other small tea leaves. It seems to work well with not having the leaves come through the filter; however, Bodum infusers are great, too!

One of my new go-to teas; a good strong brew (I tend to nearly always add milk and sugar or creamer to my black teas, and this held up very well with the addition thereof). Be careful not to oversteep since it’s on the stronger side.

The leaves in my sample are cut relatively small and smell good. They brewed up pretty dark/robust/rich. Tastes pretty malty to me, a worthy effort that I’d probably buy again. I thought this might be a little too strong for iced tea, but after trying it on the rocks I prefer it that way. I prefer it with a very quick steep time.

A robust and tasty breakfast blend. Overall the flavor is good and malty. I don’t car as much for the brisk Ceylon flavor at the end. I used to work at an office with Ceylon tea bags and I unfortunately burnt myself out on that kind of tea. But the Assam in there makes it bearable, even enjoyable with a little honey and half and half.

If you are looking for an Irish breakfast blend that is brisk and full-bodied, Upton’s River Shannon can be hard to beat. While I’ve tried a number of others, I keep returning to River Shannon as it makes a sweetly fragrant cup to start the day.
