The smoky flavor of a good Lapsang Souchong is unforgettable. This is an excellent example of this large-leaf variety. Mellow tea which is low in caffeine.

I bought all of their Lapsang variants as samples so I could compare (fun!!!!!) and I think my favourite is the Lapsang Souchong Black Dragon, not just cause the name is friggin’ awesome but also because it was a more interesting twist on Lapsang. This one is very classic flavouring, feels like just a good quality, nice lapsang. But now that I’ve tried a few of them, I think I prefer a bit of a departure from the “normal” Lapsang taste (which is a crazy flavour anyway!) and a bit more of an innovation on top of it. So I’d vote for the Black Dragon being their most interesting one, though this was certainly great quality.

We’ve had the opportunity to try several renderings of this unique tea, and the ZS20 from Upton proves to be the most mellow, but with no loss of flavor. The smokiness adds a nice edge to a super smooth cup. Trusting across the board assessments that souchong is naturally low in caffeine, I liked it enough to get on Upton’s website and order a tin.

I thought I wouldn’t care much for this one. It is the cheapest of the teas I bought, but I do love a Chinese tea base so I had a little hope for it.
I find that I really, REALLY dig this tea. So many Lapsang teas taste like half strength tea with smoke layered on top. I like them very much, especially on a cold or rainy day. But this one – I can really taste the base tea! And the smoke really isn’t lighter than the other Lapsang teas I have tried.

…aaaaand I just tried it! This is really good. I’ve been drinking mostly Chinese black teas lately, and like you found, there’s no real base tea flavor, but the smokiness is really nice. Smooth and enjoyable. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it! I am looking forward to your opinion on Black Dragon and Baker Street! I hope I can get my hands on some Crocodile from Dammann soon.
i went to my friend’s house today. we had a campfire and we made some of this tea western style with a big cooking pot for boiling the water, a smaller pot and a big strainer to strain the leaves in. this tea has aged for about a year, (well i think it aged and they say it can). so i think it has aged a fair bit. i can tell because the smokeyness of the dry leaves is a lot weaker but more in an aged way. the tea also tastes a tad weaker but in an aged way. the water did not reach a full boil but steeped well
my friend’s wife did not like the smell of the dry leaves too much (nor did their kids, who really did not like it and thought it smelled stinky) but said the tea was ok but shes going to stick to her teas. me and her had a small discussion on how this tea is made too.
we had no marshmallows or wieners today.
