From The Teaguy

An earthier sencha than our superior grade, but less expensive and also not as delicate. The citrus extracts and tropical notes make this a very refreshing afternoon tea break.

The green tea base is grown on mainland China under Japanese supervision using organic practices. This is the same garden that produces the Chun Mee that we stock here – which is clean and exceptional as you well know.

This is a tea I took out of the TTB to try. I had 3 cups total (and shared a bit of the looseleaf with a friend), but I can’t say I loved it. I’m on a bit of a caffeine kick because I have a difficult exam today (last one of my undergrad! woot woot). This is another sipdown. Gotta make room for those new summer iced teas!

The base is a bit bitter/astringent, but flavourful. There are lots of vegetal spinach notes and some citrus (orange and lemon?) but there isn’t much depth to the flavour. Also it tastes a bit like orange rind but not like fresh juicy orange. I think some mango or other tropical fruit could have added a bit of flair.

I hope your exam went well! I have a vague recollection of my last undergrad exam, and an overwhelming sense of relief. It was a crisp, sunny day. Haha.

My green and oolong tea pattern continues.

This one is very so-so. It’s ok in the earthy green and citrus peel kind of way.

Flavors: Citrus Zest

Appearance: large unbroken leaves with dried bits of orange peel
Scent: before brewing: slightly bitter orange juice | after: watery orange juice
Method: in-cup steel mesh basket | some settlement left in cup. Will try the gaiwan method next time (quick rinse + toss, then brew)
Taste: Like someone “spiked” a Sencha with some Minute Maid OJ. Not bad, but will take getting used to. I can see why someone might really enjoy this in the morning – green tea boost + the OJ flavor in one cup. Why its called Sunset Sencha I have no idea, unless they’re riffing on the orange bits being like the orange in a sunset.

Flavors: Grass, Orange
