Golden Flower Fu Brick Tea, or in Chinese, Fu Zhuan Cha is categorized as a post-fermented tea. This simply means this tea is treated like pu’erh, but is not processed or picked in Yunnan province. What makes this tea unique are the “golden flowers” (Jinhua) – a small, yellow fungus on the surface of the brick, caused by wet piling and a 2 year maturation period of the leaves. This tea brews a dark, red liquor, with notes of syrupy date squares and a hint of wet hay. This tea is the Xa Ma La Ya Handmade tea.

Aha, and finally we got a ripe pu’erh ha ha. Well technically this isn’t pu’erh, but same difference.
Thankfully, this is quite mellow. It’s not overwhelmingly earthy like some shou pu’erh can be. It’s smooth and somewhat creamy, with soft and sweet wood and musty hay notes alongside toasty grains, dark honey, and syrupy dried fruits like dates or jujubes. There is definitely a mineral earthiness to it, but it doesn’t taste like dirt and that’s a win for me heh heh. The color is also quite light and orangey compared to most ripe pu’erhs I’ve had.
Surprisingly very enjoyable, especially in the cold snap we’re having.

Grandpa Style!
This is actually a tea I already own from Sierra and enjoy a lot, so when I saw it today I knew I was just going to toss a lump into a mug and brew it lazy style since I know it’s easy going and really pleasant that way. Lots of cozy notes of brown rice syrup and honey, with a bit of a roasted grain element and even a hint of apple at times. Felt really nice on my throat, too!
