From Tea Side

Origin: Myanmar
Harvest: Spring 2019
Elevation: 2000 m
Cultivar: Ruan Zhi (TRES #17)

This tea came from Myanmar (Burma). From the plantation, located at an altitude of about 2000 meters.

Dry leaves aroma is intense. Flavor is sweet and floral with the savor of berries. It becomes more intense in the warmed gaiwan. Rinsed tea aroma has notes of raspberry and apples. The liquor possessed a light, subtle foreground taste, caramel and floral in flavor.

The tea reveals wide taste spectrum in the aftertaste, here is a creamy floral-berry wave with tones of safflower and chrysanthemum. By the fourth-fifth infusion, sugar sweetness appears on the back of the tongue. Caramel taste becomes stronger and you start to feel mellow milk flavor.

Probably, there is no need to say that this oolong confidently holds more than seven steepings. But it is certainly worth mentioning how beautiful changes the tea taste from first to subsequent infusions, delighting with new tones. Steeped leaves smell with raspberry caramel and apples.

This tea could definitely pass as a low elevation Taiwanese jade oolong. Even though the Qing Xin character is there, I also found it to be somewhat reminiscent of Si Ji Chun (in terms of its florals) and Jin Xuan (with respect to a mild milky taste varietals.

The tea is quite tasty, but honestly not too memorable. The taste profile is predominately sweet and vegetal with underlying grassy florals that come to the fore in the cooling aftertaste. The most unusual note I get is a watermelon flavour. The liquor is medium-bodied with a slightly drying finish, but not in an abrasive way.

In terms of the aroma, dry leaves exude notes of fruit tree flowers and wine cellar, while the wet ones smell very much like Taiwanese mountain oolongs – just more grassy. There is also a hint of celery in the otherwise sweet and floral aroma.

Interestingly, the cha qi is more aggressive and multi-faceted than the average Taiwanese tea. As for some specifics, I really like the mind clarity it induces. There is also a tingling sensation in the feet that I get sometimes.

With more complexity in taste and a more interesting texture, this would have been an exceptional tea – the way it stands it is ideal for neither casual nor focused drinking. Nevertheless, the price is about right for what it offers.

mmmm this oolong is so good. Super creamy, fruity, floral, and a great example of a jade oolong.

There is a natural sweetness accompanying a thick creaminess. I can taste a heavily floral and fruity flavour. Orchid/germanium, mango, coconut. I am a huge fan of jade oolongs and I drink a lot of them, so I can confidently say this is a very high quality rolled jade oolong.
