Our London Lapsang Earl Grey tea is a mysteriously aromatic leaf, similar to a smoky campfire, with the delightful addition of Earl Grey tea’s classic Bergamot Oil. This is a distinctly smooth and smokey Earl Grey.
The smoky, deep and distinctive smoked Lapsang Souchong originated in China accidentally many centuries ago. Tea was carried by horse in from Yunnan to Tibet and continental Europe, acquiring its signature smoky aroma along the way thanks to exposure to the smoke from the fires burnt for warmth during the cold nights!
To create refined smokiness now, fresh leaves are withered over an open fire to infuse smoke naturally before being pan-fired to slow down the oxidation process and then individually hand-rolled. After rolling, the leaves are pressed and stored in wooden barrels, covered with cloths and allowed to complete their oxidation. Then, bergamot oil is added along with cardamom and cornflowers.
Once steeped, London Lapsang Earl Grey releases a deep smokey aroma with a fresh bergamot oil and cardamom, at first sip you will appreciate the smooth body, bright bergamot oil citrussy taste and touch of fresh cardamom note.

Brewed western as directed, 8 oz water. Smoky nose and flavor, clear bergamot flavor. Not sure what birch leaf contributed, possibly to the bitter note I taste. Cornflower petals were just a visual garnish. Slight astringency. Slight pepperiness from the cardamom. Really, I prefer my Earl Greys to be on the sweeter side, and this was the opposite; not sour, but just UNsweet. The Ceylon base delivered a fairly nice long finish to each sip. The smokiness wasn’t overwhelming, which was a relief. Overall a pretty well balanced tea for those who enjoy smoked flavors. I’ll rate it at 78. YMMV.
